Well, if you think there is no relationship whatsoever between having the 'best' player and winning the most prestigious trophy, I don't know what to tell you. There isn't a single sport in which being the best doesn't involve/require winning the top prize of the profession--at least regularly.

This is laughably absurd and demonstrably false.

1) KO'd in the quarters of the most prestigious competition.
2) 3rd in the domestic competition.
3) Not the golden shoe leader.
4) Not the CL top scorer.
5) Lost against both Real and PSG at home in 2021.

By what measure in the world do you simply wave that away?

Ronaldo is in the same situation (4th in the league, out of the CL, etc) and, rightly, noone is claiming he is still somehow the best, even though he, like Messi, is the top scorer in the domestic competition. This is not 2012. Neither of them is the best.

In 2021 Modric, KdB and Mbappe are all playing better and delivering decisive performances when it matters. As in every other sport, that is the standard for determining who the best player is.

I do think that Mbappe is currently the favorite for the Ballon D'or as of this moment, but the season isn't over and there's still the international competitions so lots of factors to still consider later on.

I don't understand how you discount Messi's home performance against Liverpool. He literally handed the tie to us. Had dumbfuck Dembele finished that sitter we would've been through. Even though he wasn't as effective away, he still set up chances for others that they easily missed did he not? How's it his fault the defense decided to shit itself once again on an away game?? If he was shit poor both ties then yes we would be having a different discussion.

That was a great performance, but context matters. It's a two-match tie. Messi totally lacked the leadership to get us through Anfield. Nothing summarizes Messi's CL failures in recent years like the picture of him totally defeated at half-time at Anfield. What kind of leadership is that from your best players? No wonder our mentality is so weak.
