What this is a brilliant take from one of Argentina's most respected sports journalists. Like many many Argentinians he has seen messi choke time and again and here he is calling him out for doing it for barcelona, year in, year out. great take by lieberman

edit: what he is saying is that throughout his career messi has always needed great, world class supporting players (iniesta, xavi, ronaldinho) and leaders (puyol, macherano) for him to deliver his best. and that without such support, messi simply isnt good enough to win a match. he says--its not his fault. he's an excellent footballer (which he is) but not a leader and not a match winner, not unless he is adequately supported

Secondly,Leo’s G per game ratio during this time span in the CL KO is roughly 0,65 goals per game.

It is not elite,but it is pretty good,especially considering:

-Most of the teams those years were mediocre

-Along being the primary scorer(and the world “primary” is a severe understatement,as the second best goal scorer was Suarez who scored less than 10 goals and no other player scored more like 2-3 goals) he was also the primary creator.CR or Lewandowski were never involved in playmaking like Leo.

-As others have said,this time span was not even Leo’s prime.In no sport and in no era is it fair to count the twilight years of a player against him.That said,he is still great at this age.

Please tell me whether any guy in history has been better at 33-34 years old during a whole season.

By GOAT standards it was 2010 to 2015,that was his peak.

I haven?t followed CR?s career so closely but I guess that his prime was between 2008 and 2018,while his peak was between 2011 and 2017.

But all this is subjective and as we can see it is highly dependent by the overall team quality.


However,you keep hailing CR(in Barcaforum mind you ) as the ultimate clutch player,but let?s see how he fared in big tournaments and competitions,when he did not have Modric,Kroos and the other guys with him:

Euro 2008: 1 goal

WC 2010: 1 goal

Euro 2012: 3 goals

WC 2014: 1 goal

Euro 2016(his GOAT tournament ) : 3 goals
