Lionel Messi - v7

I want him to stay, no doubt. But if the club is taking a huge risk on signing him we should abstain. Now he'll sign sooner or later so this really isn't a big discussion.

But I hope the club look after itself long term rather than short term. Laporta shouldn't go to extreme lengths to satisfy Messi's needs. Seems like he is at the moment which is why this deal is so complicated and he can't be signed "regularly" like you'd sign any other player. Laporta is probably threading through loophole after loophole just so that we can pay Messi absurd amounts inside the allowed frames.

Might be one big reason.

Let's not forget that Leo is with the national team and he gets shit for everything bad that's happening to Argentina. Let's say he signs his new contract, club brings out the news and Argentina gets eliminated in Copa. You know who wasn't focused on the national team and is the reason why Argentina didn't win it according to journalists.

Can go both ways. You know who wasn't focused on the national team and is the reason why Argentina didn't win it according to journalists because he is negotiating new contract during Copa.

So, imo, get it done asap to focus on the next match seem to send better image. OR saying the contract negotiation will be hold unitl after Copa which does not seem to be the message our club is sending.

But I'm just guessing. Could be the reason you talked about.

i'm still thinking the whole contract expiry thing is just a strategy to cook the books so as to benefit the club for FFP.

Lets hope 6 times balon d'or, goat, highest goalscorer and assister in barca or any other clubs history, highest argentina goalscorer, player with most caps in barca and argentina history, father of the three sons, husband of a beautiful wife signs with barcelona.

What a life, what a living legend

Leo Messi's renewal is stuck because La Liga currently does not accept the way in which Bar?a have structured the player's salary. (2 years as a player + long term embassador elsewhere.) The club are working hard to pass the Financial Fair Play regulations.

We've known this for a while. Laporta is trying to pull a fast one by trying to bend the rules to keep Messi here.

Tebas did say that if we were to keep Messi that we would have to reduce our wage bill by a lot. He pretty much said that would be impossible to keep Messi at Barcelona next season unless Barcelona sells a lot of players.

It's pretty obvious we can't pass the FFP rules unless we release/loan/sell a lot of players. In other words, we have to sacrifice a lot to keep Messi here.

We are already forcing Busquets and Alba and Dembele to take 50% wage cut for longer contract ( though Alba is refusing ). Griezmann and De jong should be next

I saw that. But Dembele and Alba won't take a 50% wage reduction. Heck, you can't blame them. It isn't their fault that we're in this mess. Griezmann will never take a 50% reduction. He actually doesn't owe us any loyalty, and it isn't his fault. Even if Griezmann takes a 50% reduction, he's still going to be on 400k a week.

Unfortunately, we're well in the shit.... and I don't see us getting out of it anytime soon. Our wage bill is far too high, and we're expecting most of the squad to take at least a 50% wage reduction. It's okay for players like Messi to take a 50% reduction because he'll still be on 500k plus a week. Also, he's already made so many millions. I can't see most of them agreeing to it. Also, it's going to take years before we see decent improvement with our wage bill.

It's not Laporta's fault, but he can't expect the players to agree to those terms. The players have the power here. What can he do if the players don't agree to those terms? It's not like he can release them. He can't expect certain players to show loyalty when they've only been here for a few years. It's a business for some players.
