Lionel Messi - v7

I saw that. But Dembele and Alba won't take a 50% wage reduction. Heck, you can't blame them. It isn't their fault that we're in this mess. Griezmann will never take a 50% reduction. He actually doesn't owe us any loyalty, and it isn't his fault. Even if Griezmann takes a 50% reduction, he's still going to be on 400k a week.

Unfortunately, we're well in the shit.... and I don't see us getting out of it anytime soon. Our wage bill is far too high, and we're expecting most of the squad to take at least a 50% wage reduction. It's okay for players like Messi to take a 50% reduction because he'll still be on 500k plus a week. Also, he's already made so many millions. I can't see most of them agreeing to it. Also, it's going to take years before we see decent improvement with our wage bill.

It's not Laporta's fault, but he can't expect the players to agree to those terms. The players have the power here. What can he do if the players don't agree to those terms? It's not like he can release them. He can't expect certain players to show loyalty when they've only been here for a few years. It's a business for some players.

Yes, and that is why the contract will not be completed until we see some players sold or loaned out.

There was a news weeks ago that after we extend Messi, the total wage need to be reduced by 200m.

How are we going to achieve that?

That is why it is difficult to re-sign him no matter what Laporta said or will say.

We are already forcing Busquets and Alba and Dembele to take 50% wage cut for longer contract ( though Alba is refusing ). Griezmann and De jong should be next

I don't think even all the mentioned players take the 50% wage cut will be enough.

Our wage has exceeded the cap by about 300m if I remember correctly.

So I think in addition to that at least Coutinho, Umtiti, Braithwaite, Roberto,Neto need to leave.

We're giving them longer contracts

If the club offloads the old guard and dead weight, it should be possible. I don't think there's any other way around it. And if Laporta is waiting for offers, swaps, and sales before the Messi renewal, then this process could take all Summer.

It's in la liga's best interest Messi signs with us. Imagine Messi leaving for France, who'd be left in Spain? Almost noone.

This has got to stop. I've seen players bigger than the club before but when a club is scrambling to offload players to pay an aging 34 year old who didn't even want to be here last summer and putting itself in financial danger, you know we have our priorities all fucked up

If we had a competitive team or Messi was still GOAT mode, I could understand but this is for the romantics, just prolonging the inevitable in 2 years time

GOAT, one of my all time favorite players (after Dinho and Xavi) and what he achieved here will never be matched but enough is enough. Barca are the only club stupid enough to entertain such a deal. Rip that paper off the gaping cracks in the wall and build a new fucking wall

If this is the case then our financial is worse than we thought.

With La liga on our side,we cannot even get pass FFP as of today.

Messi bring the club so much revenue and without another superstar on the roster, if he leaves then Barca will be struggling for a while. And like Joan said, La Liga would be a dead league if Messi leaves.

La liga is already dead tbh, it's clinging on to an old Messi which everyone has seen at Barca time and time again. unless Mbappe->Madrid, Haaland->Barca next summer, we could be in for some barren years

I don't mean to sound like Jamdav but all the top managers are in the EPL, most of the top players are there also, it's not looking good

Old Messi still brings more value to La Liga than Mbappe and Haaland would combined tbh.

I agree that the Prem is attracting more and more top players though. It's a pity that South America isn't producing any top talents and potential super stars as these guys prefer Spain over England.

Not sure he will much longer, as with Ronaldo, football is moving on.

Ironically if Messi was granted his wish last summer he'd also be playing in the PL  I agree about the South American thing, Madrid and Barca will always be favorites there, we just gotta hope they start producing

Problem for La Liga though; the PL is not only more competitive across the board (La liga was closer last season but thats down to Madrid, Barca and Atleti being shit), more exposure, more money etc but the football is improving as top managers join, that was something Spanish teams always had over their English counterparts. Super league was the last hope to draw some kinda line but now thats failed, PL teams will soar. United just blew 75mil+ on Sancho in a pandemic.

Many of my friends are PL fanboys but would always tune in to el Clasico.. but when you look at Barca-Madrid now, theres not much clasico about it. coached by 2 failed Everton managers..

I hate to be doom and gloom, Barca do have talent in Pedri, Ansu etc and la liga will bounce back but if we keep these old players around for their name only, we could easily become Milan 2.0. Madrid are moving on from Ramos, Ronaldo is gone and now it's time Barca followed suit

If Liga needs Messi, than La Liga should pay his contract. Otherwise, it should shut up and let this be a negotiation between the club and the player.

Player greed is destroying club football. In a pandemic the club needs to spend less, the revenue stream from home games is completely dried out - and now we're forced to watch how millionaires are asked politely to renounce part of their huge wages in order to help stabilize the ship. And some fans are on the side of the players :D That's messed up...

I understand the need to enforce contracts but I can't watch my club die just because some mediocre players. with no real attachment to FC Barcelona, don't want to lose a million.

I think the main difference between the top Premier League clubs and the rest are the managers, Guardiola, Klopp, Tuchel & Nagelsmann are the 4 best coaches in Europe imo, 3 of them in England. But I don't think Klopp will stay at Liverpool much longer and Tuchel will probably get sacked within the next 2 seasons.

Barca have got to be looking at those guys, even Bayern don't keep coaches for longer than 3 years so Nagelsmann might be available soon enough and Barca have got to stop going for mediocre coaches and realise that they need world-class manager more than they need world-class players.

I wouldn't be so doom and gloom about La Liga's future, and Barca and Real will be fine if they stop wasting so much money, so hopefully Barca have learned their lesson.
