Lionel Messi - v7

Jeez time flies way too fast. I remember watching Barca in 07-08 season and thinking to myself he's the only bright spark in that team along with Eto'o. Ronaldinho was clearly on the decline by that season and partying it up. Crazy to think that was 12-13 years ago!! Then Pep comes in and rest is history.

An interesting stat:

Leo has scored only 4 goals and has given only 3 assists against the top 10 La Liga teams this season...

Less space, quality of teammates drops every year so what used to happen against the strongest cl teams happens every match now.

That and he's also declining.

Not that much. Injuries and a tough schedule post corona break dont help but he looks worse since he has no space.
Messi might have declined a little bit but he is still the best player in the world.
Put a strong team around him and his stats and play go up a lot.

He is still the best player in the world, I just don't consider him alien level anymore. Also the time for putting a better team around him has passed. Leo is 33 years old now. It's too late for us to build a new project around him and for him to adapt to a completely new set of teammates and tactical style. Time for that was after Lucho left in 2017. Lad has also shown nothing to indicate he isn't comfortable with the likes of Suarez and Busi stinking up the pitch as undisputed starters year after year. In fact he enables this sort of complacency and wants his old pals on the pitch. No sympathy for him from me.
