When was the last time he scored vs Madrid btw? Feels like it was ages ago. 2017? I hope he scores agains them, from open play.

The easiest fixture in the group and he still can't score from open play.

If it is his last season, will we get enough penalties for him to at least break Pele's Santos record?

This setup is not good for Messi to score. But since he can assist plenty, we should be fine, if others can finish (Trincao I am looking at you..).
For Messi to score he would need to play in his natural position, as a right winger, with a no.9 who he can combine with and with a midfield that can make through balls consistently and circulate the ball fast.
We don't have those and Messi is a liability densively if he plays RW all game long, so this new position is Koeman's Solution. But Messi hasn't played that position ever. We'll see if he can adapt at 33.

Something I worry about is his dribbling is a tad bit slower this season, leading to most defenders predicting correctly what he's going to do. Still has flashes of absolute brilliance twice a game but seems like defenders, as long as they are composed and in good position, will know which way he's going.

He wasn't able to score in EV's 433 in 2020, then in Setien's 433 and now in Koeman's 4231.

What's next? He needs prime Xavi, Iniesta, Busi, Alves to score?

Remember the rule: if a player sucks/meh under too many different coaches in a row, it's usually player's fault and not someone else's fault all the time.

So if he makes a great dribble for a penalty including scoring and makes a class assist for Dembele, instead of trying on his own, it's still not good enough? Today we had 5 different scorers, should we go back to Messi scores or nobody scores?
