Don't you think it's a lot easier to be effective on the ball when you're absolutely not running without the ball?

Picture this:

The opponent has the ball, you press, you get back on defense, your team takes the ball away, you get the ball and you have to go dribbling, well, or otherwise attack.

Or:

You just stand there, the whole team runs behind you, takes the ball away, then you get the ball and you have to dribble, well, or otherwise attack.

You know?

Therefore, Van Gaal is also right in saying that Messi is directly responsible for Barcelona's humiliation in the Champions League.

Nope.

Now can you explain to me how Ferran Torres is an elite forward?

Thank god you're not in charge or else we would have sold the likes of Lamine, Messi and replaced them with donkeys that run and press without the ability to do anything else.

Tbf, the titles came only when his team was the best anyway

Thats what i always criticise at Messi, he is a fantastic individual player but he was too often invisible when his team needed him, e.g. 3 finals from Argentina, they conceded 0 goals and just needed 1 goal to win, then after his prime when Argentina is a top3 team he wins suddenly and ofc he did his job there too but you expect from one of the best ever that he can decide matches where his team isnt the best in the world.
Only 2 years after he left we win ll again, and 3 years later maybe treble. I think weve underrated how important is running in the game.
He is in my top3 GOAT list :)

If it were this simple, why don't other teams use this tactic to be so successful as Messi's teams were?

Could it be that managers saw that saving Messi's genius for decisive moments was worth more (on average) than running him into the ground?

No one has a perfect resume in football (or any sport), but Messi's is the best one out there in football by a fair amount of distance. So, whatever he did, worked.

Cristiano has never stepped up for Portugal when they have needed him the most in a World Cup.
Come back when your idol has scored or assisted a goal in the most important moments for his country buddy.

What M3ls is doing is harping on a few bad games by Messi in CL, when if you look at the other side of the picture, he's decided huge CL games mostly by himself. Some examples.

Dagger goal vs United in CL final 09
4 goals vs Arsenal in CL QF 10
Double at the Bernabeu vs RM in CL SF 11
Winning goal vs United in CL final 11
First two goals in CL comeback against Milan in 13
Double vs Bayern in CL SF 15
Double v Pool in CL SF 19 to give us 3-0 lead

And these are just the biggest CL games he's decided. Plenty others that weren't this huge but he was decisive for us.

And I'm not arguing that Messi is individually the best player in History. I don't think he should have been hard pressed to work without the ball, but he should have been running without the ball at least at the level of today's 37 year old Lewandowski. A team in modern football cannot be effective - especially against top clubs in playoff games - if your one player is literally running less than 7km per match. That's insane.

The year will be 2040 and @M3ls will still be sitting inside his basement and yapping about Messi running 7 km in a CL match in 2013

You would think Messi fucked his entire bloodline given how much he hates the guy.
