Lionel "The Greatest of All Time" Messi V2

Seeing as this was bumped, I came across this debate again, and every time I see people say 'let's appreicate both' or even worse, that Ronaldo is better, in relation to this guy, it just becomes apparent that football fans are a lost cause.

This Ronaldo-Messi debate severely flatters the former and does a great disservice to the latter. They both have great stats but Messi is clearly MILES better as a footballer, to the point where the gap in many attributes is laughable.

As for trophies etc, he won 6 Ligas to Ronaldo's 2 in 9 seasons at RM, so Ronaldo clearly did not dominate Spain like his fans claim. Ronaldo also has an appalling record in many CL Finals and whenever Portugal exit an international tournament, so his 'winning mentality', 'clutchness' that clearly escapes him in finals, international tournaments, or when he's not playing for Real Madrid is an utter myth too.

The thing about these two guys is if you compare them by stats they're very close, but when you actually WATCH THEM PLAY it's apparent that one is light years better at football than the other. It will be a disgrace if history doesn't treat them qualitatively as well as quantitatively.

Ronaldo is an excellent player of course, but not special relative to all-time greats - he's not a football genius like Maradona, Cruyff, Platini, Zidane, Zico, Ronaldinho, R9 were. He's just a physical machine with passable dribbling and passing skills who uses his physicality to score a lot of goals. He's not a wonderful footballer like the above were.

Truly amazes me when I see him compared to a complete outlier/alien like Messi, who's in the top 3 dribblers, final third passers, and playmakers of all time (arguably top 1 in every category there). It's like I am living in the Twilight Zone - like other people have lost it and cannot see what i can see, and are seriously arguing that the sky is red and saying it is blue (ie that Messi is much better) is a ridiculous take.

I just put it down to them being young/clueless about football/not having much playing experience/Ronaldo fanboys. Or a combination of all.

I honestly think C Ronaldo might be the most overrated player of all time, just because people compare him to Messi, or say he's better than Pele, Maradona, Cruyff et al. It's a disgrace of a debate.

Some harsh words

🔴🇦🇷 Hugo Orlando Gatti (Argentina Legend): "Messi is not the best player in history. He is not better than Cristiano and way less than Pele. He is not the best Argentine in history either. Messi is not even a shadow of what Diego Maradona was and I would dare say that he is not even better than Di Maria who for me is the best Argentina player in recent years."

"Messi wasn't the best player in Qatar World Cup either, it was Kylian Mbappe."

As credible as Cristiano's World Cup knockout goals

Im always amazed how different opinions can be, imo he is heavily underrated, it's as SAF said once 'the team where Cristiano goes will win titles' , look at Juve, they cant even win Serie A since Cristiano left and he was the last player to score a hattrick, guy left in 2021 😳🦈

But Messi is in my top3, individual play is even GOAT level (2009-2011,2015) but there are reasony why i cant put him on 1st place...

If the players like Marchisio Pogba Pirlo prime Pjanic, Bonucci/Chiellini, prime Cuadrado were B-level players then Cristiano won Serie A with D-level players 🤣🤣 guy has really carried this crap team 💯🦈

Hey guys,

I am new to the forum. Been reading here quietly for 2 or 3 years now and today I decided to create an account. I am a culer since 2014 and I've always been very interested in the history of this lovely sport. Guys like @Maradona37 seem to have a good understanding of the game and it's history, so I was always curious about your top list of players of all time. Do you guys have such lists? If yes, I would be very interested in seeing them, but probably in another/own thread. I've been working on my list (Top 50 players post World War II) for a while now and it would be cool to compare it to yours.

League GOAT for overcoming the corruption of a League that gives it's competitor 10 extra points a season through its referees, and still couldn't stop him owning the league title while he was here.

International GOAT ( along with Diego ) for leading his country to a World Cup by producing one of the Top 2 individual World Cup performances of all time, at 35 years of age.

He's obviously been a brilliant player, but the things I said are very reasonable - Messi being miles better ins tuff like passing and dribbling.

Also, I feel you are actually overrating him here - you talk like he guarantees titles. He was always gonna win La Liga as he was at Real Madrid for 9 years, but 2 in 9 seasons is a very poor return. He won more CLs but that just showed they were a knockout team, and three came consecutively, in a bunch.

At Juve they actually stopped winning Serie A after he arrived, as King Leo says. Considering they won it every year before he arrived, and considering he was in England 6 years and Spain 9 years, he was always going to win some titles, but it's nothing special, especially in Spain where it was very poor.

I just think comments like that from Ferguson are nonsense (though I do consider Ferguson a drunken idiot who can barely string together a coherent sentence). He definitely didn't guarantee trophies with Portugal.

Like I say, excellent player, but lots of myths around him.

First of all, thanks very much.

Just google top 50 players ever or best players post WWII and plenty will come up. Also, wikipedia is pretty accurate these days and you can attain a lot of good information from there - for instance I already knew a good amount about the World Cup, but I learned about lesser events and lesser known players when I was writing articles for a site prior to the 2022 edition. You can learn from there about all sorts of leagues, players etc. As long as you check the sources it will be fine. And the sources will lead you to good football sites too. There's stuff on the history of the game, players, tactics etc.

I have lost a bit of love for learning about the game as I get older, but if your appetite is still very strong there are definitely places on the internet. As I said start with wikipedia.

Another good place to start is books. There's books about individual nations' histories, like Futebol: The Brazilian Way, Tor! (German football), or Brilliant Orange (Dutch).

Two really good books I have heard of (though I have only read about half of the first) are Inverting the Pyramid (Jonathan Wilson) and The Ball is Round (David Goldblatt). The first is about the history of tactics, the second more of an expansive look into the history of the game. I will read both in future I expect. Another good guy to read about tactics is Michael Cox sometimes, though he can be hit and miss.

Best of luck on youir journey about learning more about the history of the game.
