We don't need that many runs from deep in this system. Because you have 5 players in advanced positions. Both fullbacks + all front 3.

In this system the midfield would be used more for defensive cover and distribution.

I'm not so sure. It is also working in part because of the surprise factor.

If we played this weekly then teams would sit back, we would be too narrow with no penetration and absolutely roasted on the counter.

Its also working because Villareal are set up with two up front and getting overrun in the centre. Every time we go forward we're basically straight in on their centre backs.

I am obviously not happy with how things turned out and the decisions we made, but theres absolutely no need to bash the team while we are actually playing a decent game. Theres a time and place for everything. (Not specifically aimed at you)

Villareal are taking chances and leaving their whippet RW up the park but Roberto is making him pay for it and doubling up on the right back every time.

We are playing this formation for the first time, theres room for improvement. Griezmann looks involved for the first time I can remember (minus a few games at the beginning). Other teams can maybe adapt to this as well, but that was the first positive performance I have seen from Griezmann-Suarez-Messi.

The playing style is great, but the players cannot perform well enough to make it work .. it is a fitness issue for some and a behavioral issue for others. There are two situations, either we want to win and play with the best formation for these old players we have; or play in order to entertain .. both are fine, but if we are playing to entertain then include the youngsters

Villarreal needs every single point to reach CL somehow. So they are taking risks which gives us space. Play this game against another Villarreal which celebrates a draw like the biggest thing in years and we face a 5-5 defense and are toothless again.
These high positioned fullbacks covered by a slow midfield are suicide in CL.
