He's not a defensive midfielder ala Mascherano or Makelele who are/were specialist DM's. He's not a specialist DM and when deployed to be that specialist DM he has been average.

When not given that specific role and given a more central role with duties better suited to his game he is then a terrific player.

There is a difference between a holding central midfield player and a defensive midfielder.

Lucas is a good midfielder, maybe even a bit great, it's just a shame Brazil need someone truly great at that position.

he's excellent for Liverpool, though, and has been for quite a while. in Dalglish's high pressure system he's even more effective than normal.

considering Essien and Holden's permacrocked status and Fletcher's degeneration following illness, the only CM's better than Lucas are Yaya, Wilshere and Song. and I guess Cabaye and Tiote could make a case too.

That's a lie,he was without a doubt playing DM in the 09/10 season for Liverpool and he was our best player .

And Wilshere is overrated,he had a few good games last season and everybody started wanking over him.I remember him being shit vs tottenham.Lucas is better than him easily.

How am I being silly,he was average for large parts of last season but it got ignored because he's English,young and had a few stand out games.Lucas is easily better now,would Wilshere be in Brazils starting 11? Get the fuck out of here!

I'm sorry but if lucas can get in the Brazil XI, then Wilshere can do the same, as Wilshere is a better player, same goes for Yaya.

Its funny how in a league not stacked with proper CM, players such as these are considered to be the best, they would be good in serie A/La liga, but the best...
