Just watched this and I have literally shed a tear. Lucho make shit work
Thiago is more talented no doubt about it but he spends more time healing injuries than playing football. Rafinha has it way harder though. Thiago had Pep, Rafa has nobody. It's strange, watching this game, how small things make a big impact. The total game is not that different, also opposition is paying simillar as those today but:
- Look how our midfielders played a bit smarter, today they just wait for the ball and move only to sides, in this video they are all making those small vertical movements between the lines. It's destroying opposition defence, also providing lot of options. Just those small vertical movements.
- Ball is just a little faster not buy much
- We need those "get the job done" type of players we had in Abi and Keita...now it's only Masch
Also, Thiago look more talented than Rafa it has to be said.

Way I see things, it's either going two ways and both end with Lucho staying in charge at least till 2016:
A) Lucho can't figure out what his best 11 are and can't find a system to suit them and we self destruct again this season. The board can't hire anyone else even if they wanted to because, as has been mentioned, no sane manager would touch this team at least until the transfer ban is up so they can make the team theirs. So Lucho stays with the team for another year. I think there is extremely high probability that this how our season will go.
B) Lucho finally makes up his mind with his squad selection and we steal either La Liga or CdR. Sorry even a miracle won't see us win CL. So because of the moderate success, Lucho stays for another year.
Personally, I think out of all coaches who would be in his situation, he is our best option for right now. This team needs to transition and the ban will force us to use our young stars. Lucho seems to do well with youth players and we have real talent coming through the ranks. Samper, Bartra, Adama, Halilovic, Denis Suarez, that is a very good core to build around and I'm convinced this next generation can at least emulate the present passing one.
Our team needs to go through this sort of crucible season where we truly bleed our young players a bit so they know what it takes at the highest level, and to truly move on from the Pep era. Messi, Iniesta, Neymar and Piqué can surely stay in the picture for a while but the sooner we transition this team forward, the sooner we will reap the benefits and most importantly, maximize the remaining time Iniesta and Messi have in their careers here.
I'd be perfectly fine with us having a trophy less season next year but our youth shows massive signs in improvement and cohesion with the rest of the first team, that is infitely more important for us long term. I say let Lucho be the transition man, much like Mou was for Ancelotti at Madrid, and establish the foundation for a more tactically estute coach in 2016.
Lastly, when Lucho eventually leaves it's important the coach who replaces him fits what we need. A Jürgen Klopp would play out a lot like Tata, not knowing the tactical legacy of the club, instilling an approach that doesn't favor our players and he'd lose the team by February. I love Klopp and he is a great tactian but a direct, fast paced and physically domineering style would not suit Messi or Iniesta at all. The German or English game is what suits his style.
I want our next coach to be a Dutchman personally. I wouldn't say no to a Rijkaard return but that is me dreaming and it's very risky. But realistically, I think either Frank de Boer or Ronald Koeman would be perfect here. Both Southampton and Ajax are very tactically cohesive teams and truly play as a team. Add that in with both being intimately aware of the ins and outs of total football and their experience with the club (particularly Koeman), I think they would know exactly how to find that balance of tweaking our system enough for it to be fresh but also keep it within our paradigm with emphasis placed on tactical cohesion. It makes me sick that teams like Valencia and Sevilla are better organized than we are. The sooner all 11 players are on the same page is the sooner we get back to playing our football which is why a youth movement is key, to bring this post full circle.
If we take City down and we find an easier route to the semifinal, CL is possible. The least likely seem to be the domestic thropies. Madrid seems set to win the title this year. Their run emulates Mourinho 100pts season or Tito's win.
Easier route to semis would make the task easy how?We would still get a top team in semis and finals anyway so how can not facing one in quarters help?
