Now that he's confirmed to be leaving all the sentimentality gets to bubble up to the surface but let's not forget just how awful a manager this man was, his trophies are just a smokescreen laid out by the precious MSN that he put so much effort into running into the ground season after season.
An abysmal start to his first season included machine gun rotations that usually made no sense and a total lack of identity that saw many hoping to see him sacked, was saved by Messi switching to the RW and MSN suddenly clicked. Then all Lucho had to do was stop intentionally screwing with the team and boom, MSN were pulling individual moments of brilliance out of their asses every single game and we were the best team in the world. The following season we kept some of that momentum going but just as quickly as we found our form in the season prior, we suddenly found ourselves in steep decline. Yeah, we won the double, but that was in spite of Lucho's tactics and decisions, not because of them. We damn near lost the league with a total whimper after multiple months of lethargic displays, and the Copa by itself is no real accomplishment. Lucho's alarming decisions to use players in roles they cannot fill while completely ignoring La Masia with the exception of a few Copa starts for Munir, on top of a refusal to stop trying tactics or players that constantly fail were just some of his issues, and this season, instead of trying to rectify those problems going forward, he's actually made them worse. Ignoring and selling Grimaldo when we didn't have a decent backup LB was bad enough, but ignoring the B team completely when we don't even have a RB is much, much worse. Playing Mathieu at LB when he constantly failed there was bad enough, but shoehorning Gomes into the midfield to systematically rip the heart out of our XI when he's proven himself to not be up to task is much worse. His general tactics were poor prior to Messi switching to RW, but the tactics now, prior to the system change, had us getting outplayed by teams like Alaves, on a constant basis. It's hilarious how, only *after* he's officially given up on his time here and implementing his vision, that he's finally willing to alter his system and stop being so stubborn in many areas. Only after we're eliminated from the CL and were practically out of the running for La Liga (Thank god for Real Madrid's screw ups).
If you want to remember Lucho fondly for all the trophies he brought in, fine, that's up to you. At the end of the day he did bring in five major trophies and has the potential to bring in two more. But if you want to actually sit down and discuss his quality as a manager, you're not going to have as good a time.
As for me, I'll say this: Thanks for the trophies, Licho. Now good riddance.
