Well, that's one position in United's back line sorted. Now you just have to worry about the rest.

Evans, Smalling, and Jones are too injury-prone to be relied on (although Jones is still young enough that he could come right), and Rojo hasn't looked that impressive so far. Still early days for the Argentine though, and maybe he'd look a lot better with an experienced leader next to him to calm him down.

Rafael also has a troubling history with injuries, and on top of that still looks a little reckless at times. Good player though. But, I do think United would benefit from someone more consistent at right back.

I don't know much about United's youth prospects aside from Blackett (who doesn't seem that special), and McNair (who looks promising), but I think you need a backup left back, a right back, and two centre backs to add to Shaw.

McNair looks very promising, for someone who was dropped in at the deep end, he's probably been Utd best defender.

As for Shaw, He's outplayed Di Maria in the last few games,

You'll say otherwise but you've probably never actually seen him play, but of course as per this forum, he's just a 'typical overrated English player'.

Actually no he isn't. He's 19 years old and he's already very good, and has been for the last couple of years. Actually watch him play and you'll see the hype is warranted with Shaw. He's on course to becoming a top class player.... if he isn't one already. It's very impressive how far along with his progression he already is. People have been comparing him to Bale recently, but he's far better than Bale was at his age. McNair, the youth player who has come in and done well for United at CB, is actually older than Shaw.

If he didn't improve from his current level he'll still be worth every penny. He's looking like our best player at the minute. Forget the big names, him and Blind have been our best buys this summer.

Shh football doesn't operate on logic. :p

While it was overpaying by some distance - probably a 3rd extra of his actual value, his potential merited the gamble. This would be a homegrown player in a position we needed which could be filled for over 10 years. If it works out that money will be peanuts. Add to that he has actually improved and played extremely well for us the last 4 games at his young age (not to mention in a backline with 2 midfielders and an inexperienced CB)

I don't think that United even overpayed for him, especially from United's point of view. They need him more than the money and as you said, he could fill that essential role in your team for the next 15 years if all goes well.
