Marc Muniesa

That's because Abidal had two straight reds (even if one of them was not deserved; a red is a red) in succession. Those were followed by his incredible hesitancy and the lack of CB awareness to make Caceres look bad the last two games.

A 17 year-old that came back from a horrible injury looked better than Abidal at the CB position (until the red).

Actually, there were a couple factors that made Muniesa do his professional red tackle (I think he deserved it). First of all, one of the Osasuna guys beat Caceres. Then, Xavi Torres at RB failed to run back. The only guy to track him down was Muniesa. His tackle had to be done to save the game. :/

I think Cáceres makes himself look bad, to be honest. Fair enough, Abidal has seen red twice recently but as you've mentioned, the Chelsea sending off was very unfair & as for the one against Villarreal, he probably was wrong side of his man, who happened to be in a scoring position, which was unfortunate  I don't think he's all that comfortable at CB, he prefers to play at LB, sweeping up behind the two CBs. Wasn't it Víctor Sánchez at RB? Welcome to the forum, by the way! :tiphat:

Victor Sanchez was off for Jeffren. Pep did a 4-2-4 and put Keita at DM and Xavi Torres at RB. He's fairly slow, so he didn't track back, making Muniesa do what he had to do, albeit with a red.

If Caceres made himself look bad, he'd have leaked chances on goal from the right side (in Barça's perspective). However, all of the 1st half chances started at the left, where Abidal had to challenge. The goal happened because Abidal failed to check his man, making his teammates clear the ball for the corner. When Muniesa went on, the leaking on the left side stopped completely. He was on his man while keeping the defensive shape, unlike Abidal. When Xavi Torres didn't come back to a defensive position, that's when the breakaway happened.

Abidal's Villareal red reminds me of his red in the Euros on Bayern's Luca Toni. He had his heart over his head on both of those occasions. He's prone to reds, I guess.

My mistake, sorry. Still, Cáceres, like Márquez at times, is too wild as a CB. Perfect example, 6th minute; Osasuna have the ball, just inside their half. The ball is knocked back to their left full. Hleb is in a position to close down the LB while Xavi Torres is covering the man who had just passed the ball. For reasons unknown, Cáceres is right beside Xavi Torres, in the oppositions half, covering the same man. The LB knocks the ball over the top into space for an Osasuna player to chase. This was their first half-chance of the match, fortunately, they didn't take advantage. Why? Eric Abidal got back just in time, great covering, as per usual.

Firstly a red is a red but an unwarranted red is not something u can judge a player on. Abidal got one red and one which was not a freekick even, let alone a yellow or red.

And also, abidal is not a centre back. He didnt look good last night, and u are right muniesa actually looked better than him. But thats because abi is a LB. Everyone thinks he can play at CB (even he says its his favourite position) but hs is not a CB and shouldnt be played there.

That wasn't a red. Not even close to a open-scoring chance, and lastman? Nah.. Too bad for Muniesa though, looked so sad when he left the field. He cried?

Marc had a very good game, until the red card. The letter of the law says if you deny a goalscoring opportunity as the last man in defense, it's a straight red, but Rubinos didn't have to send him off. He should have taken into consideration the fact that Muniesa is only 17, he's not even in the Barça Atlètic, he's still playing for the Youth A team, plus it was his debut, and on top of all that, Barça never looked like scoring. They were playing like a team that just wanted to finish the game, so they could down all the Cava.

I was really annoyed at it even more once I saw he started crying. Poor guy.

I wouldn't have sent him off, but leave it to a ref born in Madrid to ruin the party, eh? At least he looked much happier when he went back out for the celebrations.
