Only area where he showed some room for improvement was his man marking on freekicks - thought Huth got away from him far too easily. On the ball, he has terrific vision & anticipation, reads the game very well.

Let's of course remember he hasn't been truly tested in defense yet either

MD says he extended with Fluminense through 2020. This will not affect a potential buy option for us, will it?

Nope it doesn't affect the buyout at the end of the season.

It's still 5 Million if we decide to buy him. I'm guessing he did that as a fallback in case he doesn't stay.

Highlights of his game vs Leicester City.

It mostly shows his composure on the ball for the most part.

Like I said in the Preseason thread. According to Sport he's going back to Brazil to work on getting his Visa.

Robert signed Marlon, no?
I think it was Cury and Robert that decided to go through with it.

Robert was doing a lot of work on trying to find a young prospect CB and that's why we were linked with names like Lemos and Davinson. Marlon had been on our list since the Zubi era, and was considered one of Fluminense's young talented Gems along with Gerson and Kenedy.

Last summer we paid to have all three on first refusal/Option Deals. Kenedy went to Chelsea, and we nearly got Gerson but decided it wasn't worth spending over 20 million for him so he went to Roma and all that was left was Marlon.

Robert was considered a bright talent according to some Fluminense fans but according to them he was Lazy and arrogant and didn't work hard enough and was a overall waste of talent. and it proved true once he came to Barca B, Overweight and he didn't remotely convince the staff he was worth keeping.

We got Marlon on Loan, and with a option to buy him for a mere 5 million Euros. and so far he's shown he could be a absolute steal at the price. He's a hard worker,Intelligent and Technically gifted with the ball at his feet and he fits the system like a glove. I really hope he convinces that we should buy him because we might have a Gem on our hands.

This really could end up being a masterclass signing for us. Just wanna see how he adapts to La Liga matches but with him, Umtiti and Mathieu subbing for Pique and Mascherano, our defense looks a lot stronger. Absolutely no point in keeping Verm if this kid shows he can consistently play at this level. You don't see panic from him when he's on the ball and against Leicester, our right side looked much more vulnerable in the 2nd half after he came off.

The one area we struggled for awhile now was buying/developing a good young CB who has the potential to be world class in down the road.

We went through guys like Bartra,Muniesa,Fontas,Gomez etc in hopes one of them would turn out to develop into something but as you can see it never happened. I thought for Sure Bartra could be the one who could breakthrough and be a starter down the line but he couldn't break into the team and struggled to impress the managers.

These days With us buying Umtiti and Seeing Tarin developing well it gives me hope that perhaps after the last several years we finally have good successors to guys like Masche and Pique. I know the club wanted Thiago Silva and Lucho wanted Marquinhos, but we missed out on both and with PSG not wanting to sell, it gives us this idea.

Why not develop our own Silva/Marquinhos? Marlon could be that guy. I know I'm overhyping the hell out of Marlon, but I feel like he could be our answer to our own Silva/Marquinhos. MD and Sport say he impressed the Hell out of Lucho, so it's a good sign.

He has the Skill set to be a Barca CB and he can only get better from here.

If Vermaelen can be sold (please take the best offer soon), Marlon looks ready now to be #5 CB. He can play for Barca B this year, except when a CB gets hurt or suspended. He'll learn Barca skills at Barca B, get used to Europe. Since you never have your first four CBs available all the time, he'll get at least some exposure to being with the first team this year, maybe more if there are any serious injuries. Then maybe replace aging Mathieu for the following season. It's great to see a player this young in blaugrana colors showing this much potential, good pickup.
