The mistake Barca did regarding Caceres was signing him at the first place. Though it's not the first time Barca does such deals. Caceres wasn't even good enough for Juve at his first loan spell there to convince them to buy him permanently. As others already said, he had enough chances at Barca and didn't take advantage of that.

He was terrible for us so I don't lament anything with him...He had his chances, he blew them...Great for him to have apparently turned a corner but it took really sucking for a long time to light a fire under him to improve

Yup, they had a fee agreed (or very close at least) late in the 07/08 season but decided against it and ended up spending more on an inferior player.

Few defenders can play for a team like Barcelona. Caceres is good in a defensive team like Uruguay or Sevilla..he was awfull(a red card waiting to happen) for Barca and I'm glad that Pep got ridd of him.

All this talk about Cups and Caceres has reminded me of this:
