Memphis Depay

There would be a lot less shit talk if Memphis scored one of his 3-4 very good chances yesterday. But it's hard to blame him when you look at our other forwards, at least he creates and gets into scoring positions. Ansu needs to come back with a bang. 2nd half yesterday was a decent performance, I have seen worse in 2011 (but we still won back then :p).

Only guys like prime Suarez can carry teams on their own (and heck, Liverpool still "only" finished 2nd).

Do I really need to respond to this, couldn't you just look at my two posts above?

"Hard to blame him"? To my knowledge, the other forwards didn't scream in his face when he was about to shoot those times, making him miss? They didn't put banana peels on the grass? Long De Jong passed a brilliant pass for him to score, but he shot backwards! Puig and Pique delivered him the ball in a good spot, but he missed the goal! When he had a perfect opportunity to play Puig free before, he instead fell without being touched to get a free kick...

Bobo you’ll be waiting a while to see that contract. If ever. Widely reported he’s on 5m a year. Nearly already paid that off with his goals and assists in the first few games.

He’s not as crap as you made out he’d be. And he’s as inconsistent as even his backers acknowledged he would be. You got this one wrong. So far at least

That was not an easy pass. Either way, forwards miss chances, shocker. It's a numbers game, and he's the only one getting into good positions. Generally we should have three forwards on that level (and for me Memphis is in the lowest "acceptable" tier for a top club).

I guess. 5m would make him earn half of the other first team players? I don't buy that, there were other teams interested. And the sign-on would probably be larger than can be admitted by Laporta et al.

I can't really fathom how he would've payed off his wage already. Then Braithwaite did as well? If Memphis continues to play like yesterday for a year, it's all fine? If he continues to score 2 goals and 1 assist per six games, he should earn 5m x 10 = 50m instead, that' his worth?

He signed for a lower wage, but only for 2 years. Can't be more than 5m. He's aiming for an improved contract once our finances are better and he impresses.

I think he is lower than acceptable, but fine, since Messi is gone (in part because the club signed Depay and Aguero of course), Depay is not as terrible of a signing. I like him more now than when he arrived.
He shouldn't be put on a pedestal though, he missed chances the others gave him, he plays with an error percentage so high that he MUST create and score some, otherwise it's just a negative influence.

I think Manaj, Konrad, Trincao and Collado would do as much or more than Long de Jong or Demir did so far, but Koeman preferred those two. I think some of the players I listed would also be able to score more than 2 goals and assist one goal if they got to play each and every minute like Depay did, but we'll never know.

There is no correlation (let alone causation).

I agree that Trincao and Konrad would have been nice to keep though. Manaj and Collado on the other hand... rather not.

Will only judge him when better players return from injury. He had a good chemistry with Braithwaite, but has none with Luuk or Demir. Also, teams are targeting him very often with 2 defenders as everybody and their mother know that he is the most dangerous attacker in the team. His finishes were not good yesterday.

Think he'll have a great chemistry with Ansu. Dembouz with all his flaws will also be an upgrade to everything that runs around in a Barca shirt these days.

Well that's what has been reported by various places. It's no secret we didn't have the money to sign players and have let many go due to their wages so I highly doubt he'd be on 10m.

Not sure why you're multiplying it by 10. You can't think we'll go far in the ucl so that he'll rack up 50 games overall!

I also said nearly already paid it off. A few more goals and assists and this will be true.

Exactly what I worried about. This player is walking a tight rope between amazing and buffoon-like. Started on the awesome side, lost balance, and tilted to the buffoon side. All in 3-4 games. I suspect he'll change sides a dozens times a season. Consistency is not really there on a game to game basis. He's like a mix of Sanchez and Neymar. He can make stuff happen, but boy when he's bad he loses every ball.

Whenever he gets the ball, there is a thirty percent chance the other team gets it. This makes it harder for other players to perform or for the team to string longer attacks together.

So who of these other players is supposed to string together anything? Luuk De Jong? Our toothless midfield? Demir? A good part of the squad has a near 100% chance to not create anything when they receive a ball.

Depay has a high error rate, and that can backfire but at least he *can* make up for it. Others just play it safe, or even fail at doing that so he still is our most threatening attacker, and he could've scored some yesterday as well.

He isn't the next coming of Messi and has his flaws, but it's also not his fault we rely on him like that. He would be just fine as an addition for the frontline if we had some decent options there to begin with. The least of our worries for now imo.

That last miss was criminal. Should have at least forced a save. Can't be the least of worries when your main attacker can't finish a sitter like that.
