I'm sorry if I lashed out, I'm just fucking livid right now with what happened in the second half. I need to take a day off from this team.

We watch two different games, it seems. Semedo was constantly getting 3v1, and in the past you constantly find shit to make it look like he was worse than he really was.

He wasn't attacked by 3 players, Isco was classic LCM and didn't hog the wing at all.
And Marcelo himself didn't make so many overlaps. Yet many times Semedo went AWOL

I acknowledged Semdo athletic ability which helps him in 1 vs 1, but he needs to be smarter which is unlikely at his age.

Anyway, all good. Edited the post. Both are upset after the game which is normal

Khaled, sorry man, but you just don't know what you are talking about. Vinicius has time and time again attacked Semedo on space, with Semedo having no backup from anyone. Considering how often Vincius got these free shots at Semedo, he didn't really penetrate the wing. Semedo contained him well. But in these situations there is always a risk that a fast winger gets through.

I know it's easy to say Semedo was shit because Vinicius was his opponent and he scored a goal, but try to look beyond such simplistic things. Normally every time Vincius has the ball, it's Barcelona's obligation to have another teammate next to Semedo to have a 2 vs 1 on Vinicius. You never let your fullback alone with a direct fast winger.

I actually look beyond the simple stuff you are talking.
Semedo movement was mostly bad timed, he allowed more space than he should. More room than he should, mu;tiple tomes

To add to this, in the modern game you must have wingers who track back.

Semedo had to worry about both Vinicius and Marcelo attacking on the wing while there wasn't a winger on Barcelona tracking back to help him defend.

We were playing Christmas tree formation today with zero wingers or width other than our fullback moving up the pitch.

Leaves our attack so one-dimensional while at the same time it gives the opposition a lot of opportunity to attack on the wings.

Stupid tactics really.

To follow up what I said in the Vinicius thread, I just want to say slight kudos to Semedo. If this guy stays, he will have a Marcelo vs Messi type of nightmare on his hands every time he has to face him and not because of quality, but because of the sheer amount of times he is in a 1v1 or 2v1 position vs this kind of winger. He did well containing. Many others would have tried to bully Vini off the ball and collect bookings as a result.

No, it's standard that when the ball is in the opposite side, fullbacks narrow down in the center leaving the farthest player to stand in space. That's being compact and not allowing too much space between CB-fullback pairs. It's just that in quick switches to the wing, the players need to quickly translate to that side. And that translation movement which is key for defensive phase was getting slower and slower as legs grew more tired. This mean that, as time went by, what was 2 vs 2, or 2 vs 3 in the first half, became 1 vs 1 or even 2 vs 1 in Madrid's favor. This put much weight on Semedo holding on vs Vinicius while being cut off from any help in a radius of 10-15m even. And he did hold on most times.

That what happens when you do not play with wingers. Carvajal, Marcelo and VJ on Semedo!

I thought he played well. He’s essentially having to deal with the entire flank by himself with the current setup/personnel.

This guy is why we didn't lost worse. Our defensive coverage on Vinicius was basically Semedo holding on for dear life alone.

Him and Ter Stegen. We are awful and the most worring part is the defenisive line/defensive tactics. With this kind of display we stand no chance at trophies in this late important part.

Great game. Unfortunately he loses his position when he follows Benzema before the first goal.

He had so much to do though, it's tough to succeed with 100 actions. One error is bound to happen when he's attacked time and time again.
