Nelson Semedo

Getting a new RB shouldn't be a priority this year, semedo is good enough. I wouldn't say any RB atm is clearly better than him. Trent is good attacking but is a liability defensively, he gets dribbled past so many times. It's just that he has gomez and VVD covering him

Plus the Liverpool aggressive team unit press which is a major stress reliever for defenders, because it relieves much of the danger before it gets to them. It's like a great filter that efficiently reduces both the quantity of the attacks they need to stop, as well as their danger-factor. Which is why we played a CL final in 2009 without both the 2 best fullbacks in the world at the time arguably (Alves and Abidal), and it was barely even noticed in our defensive performance. Not because the replacements were equally great, but because the system didn't require a great deal of individual skill from these replacements. One of these replacements was 35 years old Sylvinho.

The best teams use players to integrate them into a working defensive system, either based on pressing, or based on tactical discipline and overloads, on workrate, all-around physicality, basically values that are applied to the whole compartment, or even the whole team, from attacker to the last defender. It is very rarely that players have to rely on their individual defense skills without any backing from corresponding close compartments, as it happens at Barcelona because the team values and system has vanished in the last 3-4 years.

Semedo has been shocking in attack for us, but it’s the system hurting him imo. In his last season at Benfica he had 12 assists and 2 goals, so he can do it. Barca wouldn’t buy a full back who was shit in attack lol

On the subject of Liverpool, their full backs have ridiculous amounts of space every game due to the way they set up, I’m sure Semedo would be flourishing in their system too.

The argument is not to trade him for a better rightback, but for a CB, LW, CF, midfielder or whatever and depend on Robero+backup. We are slightly worse off (arguably) and can probably improve more in other areas where more interesting options are available.

You are absolutely right for both points. Semedo is playing well lately and we don't need to look for another RB.

It's definitely true that aggressive pressing style helps defenders, these types of teams usually have a cycle of about 3-4 years due to players getting burnt out. It's why pep usually stays at clubs around 4 years and even klopp at dortmund had a spell where they were very good for about 3 years then all the players started getting injuries. Most likely the current man City and Liverpool teams will have similar cycles.

It just isn't possible for us to play that way with our current players. We would need a complete overhaul

We need 3-4 players to replace most of the veterans who cause problems with the manager. The problem is the club and the majority of the fans can't cope with what that means. So, our best bet is to hope these veterans will retire soon and not suck everything they can out of the club. Because the board doesn't have the balls or the backbone to stay stop, it's enough. The problem is why should 35 years old Messi retire when he is allowed to walk most games, and still get paid more than he was paid in his absolute prime in 2011? If you do not know to signal to these players that... hey... it was a good time, but it's time to get to a close and leave the next generation, they will continue to play, moving like old men, getting ripped apart in Europe, while being paid tens of millions.

Under no circunstances should likes of Pique, Messi, Suarez run things at the club and in the locker-room when they are over 35. By 2022 I expect all of them to be retired or let go. Maybe 2023 with Messi, but not longer than that. Their influence in the locker-room has to stop today though, it already got to very dangerous levels, thanks to the killer partnership Bartomeu - Valverde.

The latest rumor by sky is sending Semedo and Umtiti to Tottenham for Ndombele.

And the other rumor is sending him and Vidal to Inter for Lautaro.

But assuming either of these rumors are true, where would that leave us with money for a new RB? We can't go into the season with just Bob there who we already covered his flaws and suffers some muscle injuries every now and then as well. Seems like we are going to keep gimping the team to fix on a position that may or may not end up fixing.

I mean there are some others we can sell but we still need other areas to fill as well.

Nonsens, Alves thrived with Messi. Semedo is just usless offensively Emerson would thrive with Messi

Alves is one of the greatest RBs of all time whose offensive skillset was a big part of Barca's success. For me, he is the 4th most important players of Pep's team after Messi, Xavi, and Iniesta. Alves sometimes doesn't get the respect he deserves as an all-time great because he always had an unlikeable personality.

But agree that Semedo is useless offensively. He has to assert himself in the game. Nice guys that don't rock the boat and play safe shouldn't be starting at a big club like Barca.

Barca to try and use Semedo/Vidal to get Lautaro then use Coutinho for Perreira at Leicester.

Arthur for Ndombele.

Dembele and Greizmann for Neymar.

Barcelona does not need Lautaro. We don't need Neymar as well. Besides, both Inter and PSG are offering Martinez and Neymar new 5 years contracts with almost double wages. To pay exactly 286 mil. for these two over-rated players with strong mental issues is like doing harakiri to ourselves.
