Question is: is a statement to them to splash 100m on a player, regardless of the age and quality? So perhaps a rich club is looking to offload a 29 year old as it would be the last year they can get good money for them, and the player looking for their last big contract. Diego Costa? Özil? Aguero? Are these "statement signings" according to the board? So basically, no long term planning at all. Just "fending off the angry socios" for a year and then they hopefully forget.
