At the moment, Hazard is the better overall player:

Dribbling: closer to Messi and Iniesta, great balance, change of direction while keeping control of ball. Neymar has more jukes, but needs some space, as he usually needs a moment to regain control of the ball after a juke. Hazard the better dribbler in tight spaces.

Shooting: Hazard seems the better finisher at the moment. Like Messi, makes his angle and quickly releases it. Neymar has problems finding or creating his angles.

Touch and passing: Hazard has the softer touch and more accurate pass.

Vision: again Hazard.

Intelligence and positioning: Hazard. A bit unfair to Neymar here, as the wide forwards in Barça's 4-3-3 by default hug the touchlines, so we don't really see how Neymar would support the team in a more free role.

You're basing that analysis purely on Neymar's form at Barca (and even then he has better passing and vision), for Brazil he is hands down a better goalscorer and I would say has better positioning and movement as well. Hazard does have better close control, but not by so much that it would actually matter.

The close control does matter. It, along with his natural center of gravity and balance, allows him to change direction more quickly and move with more agility in game play. That's why Hazard is so effective with cuts, close touches, accelerating away, etc. Neymar can go on the occasional slaloming run in between a few defenders and almost always that ends up in a fall due to his lack of balance failing him as he gets through, but Hazard's entire game is more built on moving around in all directions and changing at any moment. That's why I feel that Hazard is the more effective dribbler, because it's quick concise and just an effective tool that he's constantly using.

Neymar's skills and tricks and flair all help him to be what he is, creative.

He's got one defender to take on and in reality, he never even gets past the man. However since he's chained that one defender to marking him he uses his stepovers and slippery play to constantly push him back and create the situation he wants until bang, the infamous double meg assist. That's what his style of dribbling is all about, dragging one or a few defenders while he has the ball to change the shape of the team and then create something.

Whereas Hazard is like this, using his style to beat defenders on the dribble:

P.S both of those gifs are one dribble. You could say that it's anecdotal evidence of a few gifs, but that's a pretty consistent output from both of them both in terms of highlight moments and overall playing style.

By doesn't actually matter I meant it alone isn't enough to propel him above Neymar, not that it doesn't matter in general. Agree completely with your post though

Probably around the same value, different styles though. Hazard's tenacity makes him a fierce player in 1 vs 1's, but Neymar has some of that brasilian extravaganza in him that made Ronaldinho such an absolute joy to watch.

His change of direction is unreal!

I like Hazard far better than Neymar, at least for now. His playing style is IMO more attractive than Neymar's. Of course my opinion can change when Neymar gets on fire at Barca.

1. Hazard is not the better dribbler. Neymar has been looking slow and sloppy the last few months coming back from injury so its unfair to judge. The best version of Neymar has a absurd sense of dribbling in small spaces. His dribbling is so unpredictable because he uses both feet, can go either direction and can change gears absurdly.

2. Hazard is the better finisher. Neymar's finishing regressed a bit from 2012. Now he misses a lot of easy chances. Hopefully he will get back to that form.

3. Neymar has the better touch and passing.

4. Neymar has much better vision. Hes a really underrated playmaker. Better than Hazard in that regard. If im not mistaken, he has the most assists last year..better than Ozil.

5. "we don't really see how Neymar would support the team in a more free role" . You dont watch Brazil, do you? Neymar has great IQ, when hes floating in the middle of the attack he makes great runs because of his intelligence + first touch.

Neymar at 20 was the complete package already. He has that combination of dribbling, passing, quickness, finesse, finishing to go along with amazing first touch and change of gears. Kid's a flat out baller.

Hazard is much stronger, has better acceleration, better finishing ability and doesnt need to be as free as Neymar to be very productive but i would take Neymar.
