Bojan too was performing very well and there was also nothing to suggest he won't make it

 No he wasn't. And on top of that, he had horrible confidence issues, not being ready for such a big role. He was a minnow thrown in with the sharks and eventually got eaten. Oliver on the other hand has performed well against even us in a small cameo, constantly takes a leadership role, and ooozes confidence and nerve. Bojan on the other hand never really showed actual brilliance, he was just unbelievably overhyped from his success at youth level which couldn't translate into first team football. Oliver still has some growing to do, but it's pretty clear that he can handle whatever is thrown at him.

Hes still youngest player to score 10 + league goals. Got called up to euro 2008 but didnt go. Scored in a cup final, was decisive in a league victory. Lets not act like he did nothing as a professional. All the young Paco's and Juanmi's and Borja Bastón's that came after him that everyone said would be better never did any better. Quite simply transitioning as goal scorer is the most difficult thing and none of the top scorers of the top youth European National teams that i saw have made it either over the last few years. And its the same in other continents too. Saying Oliver can handle anything is premature a he hasnt had any set backs yet. Muniain was one that was said to have all the confidence Bojan lacked but its easy to say things like that when the players havent had their struggles that every professional experiences. What if Muniain has another year like last year? Does that mean all the good things he did never happened and he was always over hyped ? Absolutely not. Lack of progress and stagnation isnt the same as never being any good but hindsight and the passage of years sees people concluding things like that.

Bojan did have confidence issues... Always remember, he dropped out of Euro 2008 all by himself. Now just imagine what a world of good it would have done to him had he trained with the NT

He did but he also never grew physically. If he had a spurt of growth like Deulo did at at 17 or 18, he might have handled the rigors of being a striker better. Anyway I wont derail this thread any further as Im fully team Oliver :beer2:

I'm not saying that it was easy for Bojan, if anything it's much harder for goalscorers to make the transition because of the pressure they face of being statistically impressive. All I'm saying is that the Oliver-Bojan comparison isn't very worthwhile because Oliver shows the mental strength that Bojan lacked and in truth looks a more impressive player overall, showing very high potential. Bojan was more touted because of his success at youth level, at top level he did some things that were noteworthy but never really looked as amazing as he was made out to be. People always throw around the Bojan case as an example that seemingly young players can flop with no prior indication, but they fail to see the circumstances in which it happened and don't translate it to the case of the young player in question (Oliver in this case). Bojan had many issues in confidence and extreme inexperience, plus the pressure of playing as a forward. Oliver on the other hand doesn't have the pressure of having to score goals so he's allowed to play freely while the brilliance just comes naturally to him. Plus the circumstances with his development show that he's being correctly progressed through youth levels and introduced to the senior side.

In the end I think we agree on the core points, its just something I wanted to get out of my system. Whoever said pay the clause and loan him back there Id do that. Although 24 millions is still a lot and Imagine if he started to get random unlucky injuries like Canales.

Injuries are one thing that could be problematic. Not that he's ever been injury prone, it's just that he needs to get a little bulkier/fitter to handle getting pushed around a lot at top level. At least in his case he is at Atletico right now, not at Barca or Madrid which are so much more demanding and competitive clubs that a few injuries could ultimately force a youngster out of the side.

If Thiago leaves and if Atletico wants to sell Oliver, Barca should get him. Real Madrid have already signed Isco & now trying to sign Illaramendi whereas Barca is on the verge of losing Thiago...At the moment Barca's midfield is stronger than Madrid's but Barca should keep an eye on the future of midfield.

Can Oliver Torres play in the Xavi role?
