Yeah he's a Box to Box Midfielder.
He would work in a simplified role like in Brazil where he can work off the ball and recover and make runs into the box. But that's pretty much it. problem is we need players who are strong on the ball that not only can control the tempo but create chances as well.
Paulinho doesn't have any of that.
What ever their reason for bringing him is, It's certainly nothing to do with his abilities with the ball, He's just average at that, And not barca level, But what he can do without the ball is what he shines best at, I've already posted this video yesterday, And it's very intriguing:

He managed to intercept/Win possession from our players about 13 times during the 90 minutes, about 8 to 9 of those were in the 1st half, And our players are certainly not at a Chinese league kind of level.
His role in the team will be very specific and limited, Mostly as a player to do the "dirty" work, Something our players suck at to be honest, I can see him play in some tough away matches to thwart and disrupt the opposition attack build up.
Yet overall what he brings to the team is worth about 15m, The 40m price tag just made his life at barca many folds harder.
