well why not call it what it really is a "new" middle class since most of the millions that were in poverty before are emerging due to the country's growth. and lets not pretend sao paulo districts are really nice places to live. most are crack infested dens who share the places with the super rich businessmen. the inequality there is still quite ridiculous but yes the middle class has since boomed since the 80s-90s.

Well it sort of started in the 80s but the boom really took off under Cardoso during the mid 90s and especially under Lula in the 00s, the last decade growth has been dramatic.

I agree that there's poverty everywhere but most of the worst favelas are supposedly on the outskirts, Sao Paulo is far more of a sprawling city than say Rio. Some of the most luxurious neighborhoods in the world might not be too far removed from poverty there but the violence and all that is not what it once was. Of course there's still plenty of it, but it's not effecting the cities prices, that's for sure. I would bet your money could go a lot further in parts of Spain right now than southern Brazil.

Brazil is pretty damn expensive, especially Sao Paulo.

http://www.mercer.com/costoflivingpr

This ranking has Sao Paulo the 12th most expensive cost of living in the world, of course depending on your criteria I'm not convinced that it's always more expensive than say London, but no city in Spain is on this list for a reason.
Which is a fcking joke. Have you tried eating tapas in southern Spain? It's more expensive than every dish in a thai restaurant combined

You got to really know where the locals go to get cheap tapas, they exploit the shit out of tourists with that. Even then, at least it's not Stockholm!

I probably ate cheaper in Spain than anywhere in Europe that wasn't the Balkan penninsula. Even in the tourist hellhole that is the Ramblas in Barcelona, off the main path, those fixed price three course lunches for like 11 euros are just awesome, especially when a bottle of house wine is included.

If anything it's got to be even better now since everyone is unemployed.

Well... getting some slices of salami for 2-3 euros is a ripoff IMO. Or those small bread-things... Or three meatballs... Tapas in general are expensive. The most priceworthy tapas I had in Seville were the most expensive, but they had both won "best tapas" competitions, and I'm not surprised, they were fabulous. The "cheaper" ones were more like daylight robbery, not worth it at all. Might as well buy it in any supermarket and make your own.

On topic: Is Ganso a Sao Paulo fan? If not the move makes no sense to me

Lol, you got hustled  Paying some ridiculous cover charge or whatnot. Italy imo is cheap, and I lived there for a couple of months (much cheaper than Sweden anyway - don't even get me started on the alcohol prices we have) - but Spain is cheaper than Italy. Food, beer, wine is 20-30% cheaper (and also nicer, the food anyway - if you now where to go).

Yeah, alcohol is 1/4 of the price, it's insane. A shot for 2 euros!

I thought the Italian restaurants were expensive... but that was in Rome, so might not be representative of the rest of the country. And as a student, everything's expensive anyway :p

Now we're hijacking the thread  But Rome was not THAT expensive, you could get 2 decent 'primo piatto' and some antipasti and a bottle of house wine for 30 euros - in Sweden you would pay like 60 euros for that. But Milano and Venezia are expensive, and they hustle tourists for a living.

Oddly enough he's not even from the state ofSP, he's from the north. Neymar on the other hand is from the Sao Paulo state (Santos is in SP too though)

I don't really follow the Brazilian league, I've watched it sometimes and it does strike me that tactically and defensively they are like segunda division (or worse). But since Oscar seems to play rather well for Chelsea, how does Ganso compare to Oscar?

2 euros for a shot, how lucky. Here in Bordeaux a shot of vodka is 6 euros, whiskey is 6-10 depending on where you have it and most bars have never heard of Remy Martin
.
There is however very delicious bordeaux wine for less than 10 euro a bottle if you know which to buy.
Restaurants are really a so/so, typically you'd pay 150 for a 3 course meal at the best michelin star restaurants and 30 at a random upscale one.

Well Bordeaux isn't exactly the cheapest part of Europe. Though you never know where you will find a deal; there's a pub in Brussels where you can get 2 euro glasses of Chimay bleu, that place started two of the drunkest nights of my life.

But the plates are so small... the cheapest plates cost about 8-10 euros/each (except for pizza which is from 7), beverages cost 3-4 euros (and they're like 20-30 cl?!), you always have to pay a few euros for the service, and if you happen to touch the bread they bring (which is nothing special at all), they charge you for that too...

4 cl shots of vodka are around 8 euros in Sweden... but this alcohol discussion is off topic... it should be in the Guti thread :horse:
