Loan is bad. I'd rather sell for 60m. and cut our losses, or just use him, maybe Setien can get more out of him.

I say kick the tires on him next season. Having a world class player on your bench never hurts....

He was very good for us when he first signed.

It’s too bad he’s a mental midget. He should have never done the stupid fingers in his ears celebration.

Could have sold this bum for even as low as €50m then reinvested that in Werner who's €60m price tag is below his actual market value. Then we'd have an actual LW/ST hybrid who can score as opposed to Griezmann.

That would have been good business.

Problem with selling Coutinho for only 50m is we'd lose too much on him.

I'm not sure how exactly add-ons are included in player's amortization calculation but I think clubs are including players's maximal potential fee so in Coutinho's case 160m. This summer Coutinho will be in 2,5 years into his 5,5 year contract. His annual amortization is 29m and his unamortized cost around 90m. So IF we'd sell him for only 50m we'd have a 40m loss on him shown in the books (well, more like 32m since 8m loan fee from Bayern last year is also included).

Now if we wait for another year his unamortized value will be a bit less than 60m. So selling him for that amount (or even less depending on whatever loan fee we'd get this year) would be enough to not have a loss on him. And if he'd have a good season on loan and improve his value we could even report a profit on sale.

So from a financial standpoint loaning him for another year (as long as other team pays his full salary) and selling him next year makes more sense than underselling him now.

Coutinho cant cost 160m as couple of clauses were related to CL which doubt Barca are hitting the second of that.

Other clause to do with appearances... either 5m or 10m outstanding of that.

He also 'paid' around 12m from his own pocket for the transfer... possibly to Liverpool on the fee but thats not clear.

Wait another year and it is another years cost on books. It doesnt make much sense too wait for that.

IIRC it was reported we paid something like 5M add on or so for him.
A lot of our clauses aren't as easy as most people think.

His add ons were reported at time of signing.

Basically appearances and CLs wins. Others for qualifying for CL etc are already met.

5m for winning CL last season or this... unlikely.
5m per 25 appearances up to 100m.
5m each time for qualifying to CL the past couple seasons.

We're going to lose money. We just got to sell and take the L. Or swap for a lower wage squad player and again, take the L. He is 28 already and not going to magically go on loan and get signed one year later. I don't think he has the mentality for that after his Barcelona and Bayern flops.

If Newcastle are interested then ask for Allan Saint-Maximin + pocket money. Just an example. He can be a decent option to take the pressure off Ansu at the AML slot which is good for our squad. Seems like one of those who can do up a level with better team mates. Ok, he is a bit like a right footed Malcom, but there is a difference with competing for minutes with the GOAT in our lopsided system and competing with Ansu as third cog in the attack.

Sure, we'll never pay full 160m but I think that's a number we have to use when calculating his amortization costs.

Don't know if those 12m he "paid from his own pocket" (well, accepted lower wages to help the transfer go through) have any impact on FFP calculation.

Looks like we've paid 135m so far but if he'll stay next season and reach 100 games we'd need to pay additional 20m. So that's another pretty big argument (besides his wages) against keeping him next season as a bench player.
