Can someone help me understand why English football is so popular when it produces such a mediocre on field product? For a team with the talent of Chelsea to play the way they do makes no sense to me.

Because of the English language which i'm sure plays a part, and how well they marketed a few years ago, lots of money throughout the league & big names at the top.

1. First-come-first-served effect.

2. English language.

3. Superior marketing.

4. Kick-off times historically suited for the Asian audience.

5. Awesome propaganda/hype machine based on a long-gone past (70s) over uber-competitiveness and unpredictability.

6. Great Britain more influential in the world than Spain or Italy by a considerable margin (the two genuine competitors of the English top flight) and even Germany and France.

7. Snowball effect. Abrahmovich begets the Emiratis beget sponsors beget TV increased revenue.

8. Last but not least, people outside of Europe are not familiar with the history of the game. The English league is all they are aware of (most of them)

Can definitely vouch for 4, that's a big reason why I watch more EPL than say Spain or Italy. The matches start as early as 9:45pm on Saturday night, depending on daylight savings. Chelsea were on at 1am today, which isn't too bad for a Sunday night. CL matches, for example, start at either 5:45 or 6:45am, Serie A usually starts at 1 or 2am, same with La Liga, and the better matches are usually later on. I miss the Clasico sometimes since there have been times it's started at 7am Monday morning, when I would normally be getting ready for work. Watching Spanish and Italian matches isn't too bad when you're not working, but when you need to maintain a sleep pattern over the weekend you either need to miss it or deprive yourself of sleep to wake up for it, or stay up really late end up sleeping in way too long the next day.

Lol despite how bad they've been City are still the 2nd best in the country. The quality of the EPL is so bad, I'm hoping all of City, United and Arsenal strengthen well so it's not such a cakewalk next year. Barring around New Years, this season has been no problem. *yawn*

Too bad we were so pathetic against PSG.
