lol Messigician keeps flip flopping between hating Valverde and liking him. its so strange

I will explain this.

On one hand we have a manager who took a depleted squad, nearly made them go unbeaten for a season and nearly won the treble if it weren't for a gassed Roma. 2nd season dominated the league and again treble was in hand but one bad game at Anfield ended that.

With a little luck we woukd have had back to back trebles, football is all about luck imagine in 2009 if the referee hasn't helped us against Chelsea maybe we would still be waiting for a champions league who knows.

As of now EV is undefeated in UCL this season and top of the league. The potential for a treble is always there with EV, the players like him he is a good fit.

On the other hand the football is boring, he has bottled when it matters most, and we are on a downhill spiral so I understand the need to sack him.

But always a part of me will feel but what if we just scored an away goal against Roma or Anfield in the dying embers of the game like Iniesta did against Chelsea so many years ago.

So it's a good decision on Barca's part, then.

:bartomeu:

It is and it isn't.

People forget this coaching thing is about finding the best fit for the given moment. Setien is the best available fit for the short-term. And his past experience doesn't matter. Zidane's didn't. Setien will have a positive impact initially, like any coach does. Enjoy it while it lasts. There is no way of telling how long it'll last.

Valverde also suffered 2 CL humiliations in 2 years.

Let's see if Setien can do that.

Somehow i find it more realistic for Setien to get humiliated at a difficult CL stadium than win two Liga’s. He is known for bad defensive organization and has suffered some BAD defeats with Betis.

Let’s look back at this this spring.

The problem with Barto is that he always goes for the safe option, seems like he hates being the guy firing a coach. Valverde should have been replaced a long ago. Lucho too. He wasn’t even fired.

I’m afraid that even though the signs show that Setien isn’t the one, Barto will go for the safe choice - to continue him

true but I think this latest mess probably made Barto regret not firing EV last summer. I dont think he'll do the same mistake especially in his last year of presidency. He has always said he wants to win one more CL as president before his presidency ends. also, Barto only wanted to sign him for 6 months but Setien's agent pushed for more.

You have a point. However, I'm just enjoying the moment of Valverde not being here anymore.

Judgement on Setien will come in a month or so.

Yes, Valverde out is something to celebrate. Sad Barto didn’t do it this summer or the one before, this season will surely be without trophies. Bad, bad management

Would have preferred a top coach this summer. Or a young inspiring one.

I’m not optimistic about this. We will play more pleasing for the eye but we will see huge disappointment in the results. Cules will soon realize that Ernesto - even though he is not a top coach - is still better than what most think. And people will soon also realize that our lack of elite players is also to blame, not just the management.

Looking forward too see Setien play “his football” with Messi and Suarez walking around centrally and forcing him to play 442, will be fun.

Suarez is done for this season, and needs to be sold in the summer anyway, and hopefully will be. Griezmann on the other hand is a totally different beast defensively and can cover everything and more Messi not playing defense brings. And with Dembele returning and hopefully staying fit with some more emphasis being diverted to physical preparation, and with Fati and Perez we really have no choice but to play 4-3-3, especially since Setien's teams always play it too, he even plays with 3 defenders more than he does 4-4-2, which his teams basically never play.

Give him younger Messi, younger Suarez, and move Lopetegui back instead of Zidane, and I think he'd be a lock to win the title this year.

Give him even younger Messi, peak Xavi, Iniesta, Alves, Puyol and move Schuster back to a Madrid with Drenthe, Gago and I think he’d be a lock to win the title this year

Lmao.

Pep had 3 Liga titles, Lucho had 2, Tito had 1, EV had 2 and we pushed to the very end in Tata's season and Lucho's final year.

Point being, we were going to compete for La Liga with whoever the manager of this team was.

A combination of Messi carrying this team and Real and Atletico being washed up was going to put Barca in prime position for Liga regardless who was in charge.
