Quique Setien

Should leave after this season. Shouldnt waste another season because we need a completely new project and he shouldnt lead it. The sooner the board realizes this, the better.

For what it's worth I believe we need a LW, CF, Offensive CM, B2B MF, CB and arguably a RB

So this team have a lot of issues, but I don't get the people who are seeing something completely different so far. I'm also not handing the keys of a new project to a 61 year old Quique Setien who made his CL debut last night and has never won a major trophy.

At least Valverde did well with Athletic and went to a Europa League/UEFA Cup final with Espanyol.

A competent management can pull that off. Thats 3-4 signings a summer but it cant be done with guys like Abidal. Kloop and his team pulled it ofd.

I think it's down to poor physical preparation personally. Not all old players become lazy. Some are true professionals and hardworking. But ours, thanks to how this club evolved in time, from board to the managers we had, have become complacent and lazy. They were never under risk to lose their spot, never challenged to keep the same level. So this led to a decrease in intensity from season to season.

Could be but that's again down to the coach and his authority which obviously these mid table coaches don't have.
Put Busi, Alba, Pique on the bench or even on the transfer list if they are the problem, but all this coaches are more iching to be theri friends then their coaches.

The board has 1 year left, there won't be any kind of long term "project" with them anyway.

Exactly. Setien will be here next season for sure because this board won't care at all. They know they have only one year left and they don't give a fuck about any kind of long term project. Anyone who thinks well make big changes this summer will be very disappointed. When the new board arrives we can expect some movements, hopefully in the right direction but until than nothing will change.

We definitely need wingers, I bet Setien would take Tello or 40 year old Joaquin over our current "wingers" Griezzman and Vidal
Concerning CL experience, Rijkaard, Pep and Lucho haven't managed a team that played in CL before they took over Barca and all 3 have won CL later. Now if you look at RM Zidane has the same story. This CL experience doesn't mean much IMO, we can win CL simply because 2 factors Camp Nou and Messi, we can win against everyone at Camp Nou and Setien simply needs to make sure that we won't concede too many goals in away matches.

In principle I agree that we might need different manager for rebuilding, I think Arteta would be interesting choice depending on how he does with Arsenal, but I still would like to see how Setien does after this summer transfer window considering we actually bring players that will strengthen us.

Absolutely have to exploit width and we're habitually poor in this area for years now. I cannot comprehend shipping Perez out but nevertheless we have Braithwaite domestically and Fati has to be regular option on left. We cannot waste the shape with Griezmann on the left, it limits options dramatically. Presumably Quique is getting a good look at Collado now too but width is a huge issue

Carles Perez was never a solution. He showed even less than Sandro and Munir when he played. Setien is not a problem, but he can't compensate all the other issues we have. Managers aren't magicians.

Carles Perez was the only one from B team , beside Fati, that belonged to first team football. He wasn't a solution but selling him deepened our problems.

Setien is a problem, he is an old yest man who never achieved anything in his career who was 4th option for our incompetent SD.

As DonAK says, you can't trust someone like him to build a new project, which what we need.

That is fair assumption, but it doesn't mean it is the right thing.

3 of those 4 were CL winners as players, all of them played plenty of CL games in their career as players.
All 4 were considered stars, Zidane is a football legend, Rijkaard was one of the best ever in his position and an icon to both Milan & Netherland. Pep was club icon and Lucho was a star in FC barcelona.
All 4 were between the age of 37 & 44 when they were hired. A well respected,
accomplished players that were ready for next step.
Setien? He is 61, had his CL debut as a manager/player 2 days ago, had played in European competition once in his playing career. Underwhelming CV as a coach.
And all of this during the time we need a rebuild for this squad.
He is a stop gap, nothing more tbh. Whether it is this year or he will stay another one, there will need to be a new era handed to either accomplished coach or a young new one.

You simply don't know what is going to work in football, Ancelloti was suppose to be established manager with plenty of CL experience and yet he got sacked from Bayern, now from Napoli, manager who has never won a major trophy might be more motivated to do so and demand more from players. Considering young managers I think Xavi will take over sooner or later, question is when. I also am pretty sure that under Xavi we'll play very similarly to way we play now with Setien, so I wouldn't get my hopes high thinking that new manager will bring a revolution to a team.

Pep and Lucho won big games as a player and had a significant history at the club. Rijkaard was a legendary player in his own right.

All three of them were young, upcoming managers when they took over. Setien is closer to retirement.

I know that World Class managers don't grow on trees, but I would look at ten Hag, Nagelsmann, maybe even Xavi to lead a new project over Setien.

Lol, guys. Setien is a transition manager to try to save the season EV nearly ruined, until a younger, better manager takes over and tries to create a new team. That's all.

He will be here from 0.5 to 1.5 years. Man is doing a very good job in current conditions.

I agree fully. But this type of authority is only possible under a new board - manager duo. We're talking about something similar to Laporta - Pep, when Pep came and immediately cut off two main stars in the team in Ronaldinho and Deco. A new board + an average manager won't work, and neither will a crap chickenshit board who protects the veterans + a top manager.

The plague of this club has been that for years we had a crap board, and average managers, which is really the worse combination to have, because it led to star players (who all happen to be veterans) being pampered and eulogized, basically leading the club and deepening the issues on a year by year basis.

Imo we need to change the intensity and speed of the way we play. Can't stress this enough. There is a huge discrepancy between the way we move, and the way other teams move. Like night and day. This is only achievable by implementing a hardworking model in training sessions and such. Implementing this model will no doubt cause the old players to drop off and struggle to keep up. That's how you phase them out, simply by them not being able to keep up with the physical requirements of playing for us. But for them to not be able to keep up with the level, it means the standards have to be imposed to them.

The most striking difference between this Barca and the more successful older Barcelona versions is basically the speed of play and the intensity of play. These two have gone down really a lot, to the point that we are now a washed up, slower version of past teams, trying to match-up with teams operating at better physical levels. Faster, stronger, more ambitious and more hard working teams. Basically like a boxer in his prime, vs a boxer 20 years older who is fatter, slower, who looks and moves like a grandpa.

I agree totally. A competent board with a proper sporting department would have never allowed Valverde to continue after last season's embarrassments, would have never allowed a situation like the one we face currently, an ageing depleted core with zero squad depth, scrambling to make emergency signings etc.

It's a total catastrophe right now. This club needs new management with the right expertise, vision and a proper sporting model to take us forward. Barto and his executives might probably be good at finances, investments, marketing etc but on the sporting side, they leave alot to be desired.
