These days everything is a written contract but what it contains is shady..
It is very common teams all over the world agree to some terms with each other concerning transfers, investing etc.
Normally these agreements are between teams who are not big competitors with each other (including UCL).
It is known that most middle tier squads have deals with the world's biggest clubs. Basically they want to sign deals that benefit both parties, no matter what.
These deals do not include something like "We will sell Modric to you in 2014."
So, it's a bit complicated and basically none of the partnerships mean you actually would HAVE TO do something with each other. The term could be for example,
"If team A agrees to X, they will get Y in return for 3 years from team B." Basically they want to help each other when both parties agree to the terms.
It is like any other business, it is wise to form strong partnerships where all ends benefit as much as possible. Being nice to everyone does not work. In order to
gain the biggest benefit it is wisest to hold on to a few or several partners.
