Funny that you mention Liverpool and CL 2005, because that was a combination of a good coach and shit players.
Last season was a combination of Rafa losing control of the players, a psychological impact after Alonso left, and an imbalanced squad (no creativity in the middle).
A team with a shit coach is gonna play like shit no matter what, it doesn't matter if the team has decent players or not (Juventus last season)
But a team with average players can play well with a good coach leading them, on a short-term anyway, like Roma with Ranieri or Villarreal with Pellegrini or Garrido.

The thing is, a good coach without players will have a hard time reaching the top. Pelegrini's villarreal was great for Villareal's standards, but they didn't win la liga, uefa, copa del rey, etc. Mourinho's Porto had GREAT players, Mourinho's inter had a great players, Rijkaard's barcelona had great players, the list goes on. Would you consider coaches to be more important in teams like Pep Team, Dream team, Cruyff's holland, Maradona's Argentina (player not coach), Brazil's pele, etc? Had Iniesta not scored in Stanford, Pep's work would've been good, but not legendary, had diego milito fallen injured during Inter's final sprint, inter probably would've gotten eliminated against barcelona. What would've happen had Koeman not scored his famous free kick? had beletti not been so lucky? . I Agree that without a decent coach, a team will never triumph, the question comes down to something very simple:

How often does a team with average players and a world class coach beat a team with world class players and an average coach?

In one thing i defenetly agree with meta: A coach can be 90% of a team, but without the players executing his plays and instructions flawlessly, the best coach in the world will never achieve anything.

I'll redirect your post ..
how made Dinho the world beater ? who made Motta the solid player we all saw after being a cast off in barca and Atletico ? who rediscovered Sneijder ? who introduced and made the entire Porto team who we knew nothing before Jose take over.. if Brazil knew Deco will be the Deco we all saw they wouldn't hand him with ease to Portugal , who switched Eto'o to a winger /full back not the predator in the area we all know him ? Milito was mostly a local competition goal scorer .. very good but not world class.. people thought Inter/Jose was crazy to sell their best player and top goal scorer same way they said buying this waste of space Lucio is a bad idea..people said Eto'o will be the goal scorer.. he wasn't .. he was the creator and the work horse.. how made that happen ? not the players but the manager .. Eto'o loved nothing more than scoring goals
who slowly introduced Iniesta to fulfill his potential ? trusted Valdes despite his consistent fuck ups for several years , gave Messi his first shot

It's very easy to sit now and say look Porto,Inter,Barca all had great player but that would be far far from the truth and claiming something you couldn't tell

if you go back to the predictions you would see more than 95 % didn't expect Inter ,Porto , CL shy Barca to win the trophy .. yes we all know NOW they were/are great players but it was Jose,Frank and others who made them the world beaters none of them was world beater or world class when he joined his team

can't wait for tonights game against bayern! bayern certainly have the edge over real, but never the less, it should be a nice game to watch.

arbeloa, gago & m. diarra stayed in madrid. mourinho decided to give them a rest since they were the only internationals that played the full 90mins on wednesday. i'm not sure why dudek is left at madrid though. and there seems to be a certain diffrence in version regarding m. diarra. AS say it cause he played 90mins and MARCA say he's injured.

if i get the frontpage picture right, MARCA predict the following line up

--------------------casillas--------------------

ramos----------carvalho---garay--------marcelo

--------------khedira-----xabi alonso-----------

pedro león----------canales------------cristiano

--------------------higuaín--------------------

hmmm, on paper a decent looking side there but not one that would strike fear into the heart of Barca! Id be quite confident if we came up against this side in the El Clasico. Mind you, still over 2 weeks left in the transfer window!

Your slow point is interesting actually, unless they ever play Ramos in the middle they lack any sort of pace there, Carvalho is old and never fast anyway, Garay is just slow, and Pepe basically died. The one thing I would want in my defenders in La Liga would be that they could keep up with fast forwards.

Carvalho looks like even more of a panic buy, doesn't even bring in what they needed most at centre back.

Lesson number 54 in the footballer manual .

if you have a player with a good sense of positioning he can easily overcome his lack of pace .

Pique isn't slow, he just isn't fast. Carvalho is a tortoise. The rest don't have great positioning.
