Yes, but Pique is world-class - a different type of player when compared to the now past-it Carvalho. The only comfort I see in his signing for you and the rest of the Madrid fans is that in a compact defensive team that Mourinho is likely to set-up against good attacking teams, he'll probably be very good.

Oh yeah - exactly, how did I miss that point. Pique has those lovely long legs to keep up.

I'll redirect your post ..
how made Dinho the world beater ? who made Motta the solid player we all saw after being a cast off in barca and Atletico ? who rediscovered Sneijder ? who introduced and made the entire Porto team who we knew nothing before Jose take over.. if Brazil knew Deco will be the Deco we all saw they wouldn't hand him with ease to Portugal , who switched Eto'o to a winger /full back not the predator in the area we all know him ? Milito was mostly a local competition goal scorer .. very good but not world class.. people thought Inter/Jose was crazy to sell their best player and top goal scorer same way they said buying this waste of space Lucio is a bad idea..people said Eto'o will be the goal scorer.. he wasn't .. he was the creator and the work horse.. how made that happen ? not the players but the manager .. Eto'o loved nothing more than scoring goals
who slowly introduced Iniesta to fulfill his potential ? trusted Valdes despite his consistent fuck ups for several years , gave Messi his first shot

It's very easy to sit now and say look Porto,Inter,Barca all had great player but that would be far far from the truth and claiming something you couldn't tell

if you go back to the predictions you would see more than 95 % didn't expect Inter ,Porto , CL shy Barca to win the trophy .. yes we all know NOW they were/are great players but it was Jose,Frank and others who made them the world beaters none of them was world beater or world class when he joined his team

And im not denying that. Of course the coaches deserve a lot of credit but i wouldn't go as far as saying Mourinho or Rijkaard are/were so great that they could've achieved the same result with any set of players. If forced to choose, I'd go with players. Although i completely agree on coaches making players or discovering them, and being trophie winners (see capello), it'd be hard to argue Mourinho netting the same result without Deco in Porto, without Diego Milito in Inter; Rijkaard without Ronaldinho, Pep without Iniesta, Xavi or messi, Del bosque without Villa xavi or iniesta, etc.

"Decent" teams rarely win major trophies (greece the latest exception), The analogy i like best is that of an Orchesta and its director, you can't have good music if the decent band can't follow the world-famous conductor nor if the decent conductor can't handle the world-famous band. Without being forced to pick sides, I'd say they were equally important.

Of course players are important, no one's denying that. If they weren't, what would be the point of spending millions on them? Players are important, but not more so than the coach. What we're saying is that a good coach can get at least decent results out of an average squad, like Pellegrini did with Villarreal, or Ranieri with Roma. They didn't win any major trophies with the team or anything, but they still got good results. But an average coach isn't going to achieve much at all even with a great squad. Think about Juve and Atletico last season, Valencia 07/08 season, etc.

Yep .. i completely subscribe to that notion ^^^ , not even the best 11 in the world can win anything without a great manager .
Argentina still stand out as the best example due to the overwhelming wealth in the current generation talents (which IMO better than all of Argentina generations by a country mile )
let's not forget we are not saying the players are not important but the manager is much more important than the players

He wasn't past it last season with Chelsea or the WC.. so i don't know from where u got this idea Jordan .. if anything he was still one of the best players for both sides
neither did he suffer from Villa speed or other fast strikers in the EPL even when he is playing beside the turtle Terry who is much more slower than any current defender

Carvalho looks like even more of a panic buy, doesn't even bring in what they needed most at centre back.
What we needed most was experience.

Having a world class, experienced commanding CB organising your back 4 properly > pace

Thank you Mourinho, for signing a dirty, old and slow central defender - Well done. *claps enthusiastically*

 @ this guy trying to convince himself Carvalho is not a good signing. Cute.

And Granero on the wing.
Brave lineup from Van Gaal. Badstuber is set to take more minutes as CD this season from what I´ve heard. Breno? Test match for him I reckon. Midfield looks too offensive.
Should be a goal fest.

Both Khedira and Alonso have attacking tendencies .. it all depend what he wants from them , i hope Lass is the one behind Sami & Xabi not like last year when Xabi was the guardian of defense and Lass /Gago played ahead of him
i expect a poor game from Khedira considering he is yet to adapt or learn the language
10 min before kick off

Update
Jose made some changes in the lineup
he will be with the strongest 11

Ramos------Carvalho--------Garay-------Marcelo
--------------Xabi Alonso------Khedira-----------
Pedro Leon------------Canales-------------CR-
-------------------------Higuain--------------------

now that's more like it

Khedira can cover alot of ground. Very energetic player. Not sure about his vision and creativity up front although I have seen him playing a good one-two.
