He was already in decline by then as his main and only weapon - his pace - was already declining due to the injuries. I said it at the time so it isn't hindsight. I rated Beckham but even then I knew he got a significant boost as a player due to his 'profile' off the pitch. Plus, we all knew Makelele was good there. So it was a case of Perez being a fame worshipper and getting rid of the guy who isn't glamorous and bringing in the (to outline Beckham's glamour) very poor woman's Brad Pitt in his place.

Fair enough. I still think Beckham was an unnecessary transfer in and of itself though, regardless of Makelele.
