Real Madrid

Maybe. But Beckham was still a case of too many cooks.

Owen did okay but he was never gonna be a Real Madrid starting striker long-term, let's be serious. He was already in decline by then as his main and only weapon - his pace - was already declining due to the injuries. Either way Owen was an addendum to my post - it was mostly about Beckham and how his fame and celebrity worship fooled Perez.
Owen was fine till arrived in Newcastle and then on
Wasn't going to be used for reasons nowt to do with his football

To think people still think a guy directing a club to titles can't get things wrong in the process is still a thing

Man makes mistakes
Be it Makelele
Be it defenders
Be it selling one player, sacking one coach or keeping another
Makelele likely cost you four years, though. After selling him it took your four more seasons to win one of the big two trophies.

It's nothing major against Beckham, who was a very good player - it's that he should never have been signed and Makelele should never have been sold.

He was never gonna be good enough to start for Real Madrid, if they wanted to win big trophies, no matter how you try and defend it. Far too one-dimensional.

Beckham could have been signed no problem
Perez making it out signing him and getting rid of specifically Makelele has to be the way was what was the issue. It's not new mate

I said it at the time so it isn't hindsight. I rated Beckham but even then I knew he got a significant boost as a player due to his 'profile' off the pitch. Plus, we all knew Makelele was good there. So it was a case of Perez being a fame worshipper and getting rid of the guy who isn't glamorous and bringing in the (to outline Beckham's glamour) very poor woman's Brad Pitt in his place.

Meaningless stuff mate
Owen was signed, played well when got chance to
Didn't keep playing as management got too involved with hiring managers to facilitate letting inmates run asylum

It doesn't matter. Michael Owen was never going to be good enough to be a main player in a team winning the league or CL. His entire career proves it. You know it and I know it. You know it was a stupid signing.

'Playing well as a rotation player while living in a hotel and bagging some goals' is a world away from what Real Madrid need from a top striker. Raise the standards.

Indeed
Beckham transfer was justified in of itself
Makelele never needed to be pitched as sacrifice
Perez did one good move by signing the former and a historically shit one by getting rid of latter and making excuses
It's not hard

Fair enough. I still think Beckham was an unnecessary transfer in and of itself though, regardless of Makelele.

But it seems we agree on some stuff and disagree on others, so we have reached some level of consensus.

It's been great doing business with you. Night.

Edit: btw, 'sacrifice' made me laugh, like he's being burned at the stake.

Figo at 31 had a great title year before VDB got shafted
Even so would not be getting any younger so Beckham in wasn't critical but stupid not to pull if available given squad
Biggest 'needs' were defenders. Not that club recognised that then

Player would have added a lot if president knew anything about building a football team at the time. But Perez loved to step on his own dick. Still does
