2006 was Cannavaro. 2018 Salah was broken in the final and non existent in the world cup, didn't have strong case to win despite his incredible season. 2019 and 2021, Messi clear both.
To be fair how much can Salah really do for Egypt in the World Cup, especially carrying an injury? They're ok but far from elite. In fact they were better in general before Salah arrived on the scene (won AFCON in late 00s two or three times I believe).

And as if Messi had darker skin he would win less. Cmon, be serious. Vinicius's skin has nothing to do with it.

Canna didn't deserve it in 2006, dinho and eto'o were way better.

But "World cup" year.

Modric played such a minor role in 2018 in the CL wins. Watch the games, Madrid survived with some clutch individual goals, some referee errors vs Bayern, and got dominated in many games. In La Liga their were fairly shite. You can't give individual awards to players based mostly on team results. If so, Carvajal would be a total lock this season. Even scored in CL final a key goal, not to mention his performances.

In 2018 Salah was the best player individually

but in terms of title wins Modric won cl + reached Wc final with Croatia

and Ballon dor looks also on big titles thats why has won

strange competition

Didn't Croatia like win most ties on penalties? They had Perisic on fire in offense that year I think.

Imagine Charisteas winning a Ballon d'Or.

Vini is getting robbed tbh.
But voters fatigue is a real thing, Spain hasn't got a ballon d'or during their golden generation, EPL didn't get one in 15 years, while in the past 15 years only Messi won it outside of Real Madrid.

It was bound that journalists would love to recognise someone else.
I also believe that if only football prowess is considered, Vinicius should win it. But If Rodri wins it, so be it. Fck everything else. 20/30 years down the line, little will be remembered about how well Vini did in the year pr what he accomplished, he was not a winner. Same way only a passing reference is made about Iniesta's unprecedented performances and achievements in 2010 when history is counting the number of BDRs the midget won. History favours winners ugly or not...never the close or beautiful losers.

It is what i have been drumming into the heads of some dunders here, everyone wants to win while being beautiful but if those 2 are mutually exclusive, fck beauty and focus on winning ugly. Little will be remembered about how you won.
