Ronald Koeman

Ghostmaster

Danger Ahead
I said that Koeman would great choice when we were looking for Valverde's replacement, Netherlands play some lovely, dynamic football with fast wingers like Depay. And it's better time for him to arrive now then it was in January as he has time to make some transfers and get rid of some senior players.

Everton fans have a very low opinion of him it seems. Not a very inspiring appointment.

Rijkaard and Lucho were rather mediocre before they joined us and both did well enough here. Similarly Koeman is the type of manager that you cannot project past results on to any future performance here.

I am cautiously optimistic.

This season it really doesn't matter whatsoever how well he does in Liga or CL. What really matters is whether he makes key decisions about the future of this team moving forward.

He needs to first establish that the Amigos are out the door. Sell who you can and for the ones we can't, they become veteran bench cheerleaders.

Then, give at least a skeleton idea of team structure that Barca should establish going forward. FDJ becomes the spine of the midfield and Busquets is gone. Also establish the precedent of trusting Ansu and Puig and the roles that they will hold in the team. Even potentially show Barca how a good double pivot can look like.

This idea that "double pivot is slow for 2 big statues" is outdated as hell. Liverpool, Bayern under Flick, France, 18/19 Ajax, Holland all use a mobile double pivot sort of setup. FDJ with Van de Beek being a high energy Box-to-Box support player next to him can easily mirror this modern meta. Puig ahead of them will also be a relentless dog with his pressing and all 3 players in the midfield are good for 10-11km per game at least. A fluid 4-2-3-1 is THE current meta and Barca have been fools to be so out of the loop on tactical trends.

If Koeman can establish these precedents then I don't care how sloppy we look with the growing pains of a new team. Future coaches whether it be Xavi or Pep or whoever need to know how to use FDJ correctly and if Koeman can trigger a breakout season for FDJ it will become undeniable to see the role he is made for. He is not the next Iniesta and never will be.

Once we truly give him the keys to the midfield the team will start looking way different from top to bottom.

Yes. The only result that should maybe be expected of him this season is a top 4 finish which even now shouldn't be too difficult. Beyond that, he should be free to do whatever he believes to be in the team's best interest long term.

Set the team up for the future and ideally stay in the CL. Anything more is a bonus this season.

This formation and personnel could actually accommodate Messi in high pressure games. We anyway don't have a striker.
Only problem are those left back and right back positions. We need to find replacements for Alba and Semedo at some point, but I do agree they are 2nd tier problems in the grand scheme of things.

Busi and Roberto to be used only on easier matches. Griezmann could also replace Messi for those matches too.

Yes, resting Messi more should be among the main priorities. The club should not care about individual awards of players at this point. Cut down 30% of his minutes, and use Griezmann there, as you say, from time to time.

I agree on this with you, however I would rather exchange Griezmann for some other player. As we all saw he is definitely not a good fit with Messi, not to mention he is way too expensive for a bench player.

Although resting Messi would be beneficial its not gonna happen because the team cant compete in La Liga without him playing each and every game. They drop points a lot when he is not there.

If we had a stronger team such as one's from the past 5-8 year then we could cope but right now he cant be rested and hope to compete for the title, team is simply not strong enough to cope.

According to Rac1 other candidates we've considered besides Koeman and Pimienta were Eusebio and Henry. I'd take Koeman over them any day. Eusebio just gives me another Setien vibes and Henry has played with Messi and other amigos so don't see him having what it takes to break their group.

Laugh out loud in tears.

Same names (minus better options like Pocchetino and Gallardo) after losing 8-2 then after 2-1 to Atl.

Bartomigo's are so tragic.

If what I read online about Koeman is true, he rules with an iron fist and is a "my away or the highway" type of manager. So at least he'll clear the amigos who can't run anymore. And would set the ground for Xavi 1-2 seasons down the line.

This team doesn't need fancy tactics at this point. Just shaping the squad by rejuvenating it with quality fresh blood, proper trainings week in week out, and a staff who doesn't tolerate slackers who want to play based on name only.

I have hope that these guys aren't puppets and will put the Amigos to respect.
