Ronald Koeman

Horatio

You're welcome
Also, let's not forget about the whole pandemic thing and how that could put an extra strain on things. Respetc

So many bad decisions and games underperforming seemingly because of his decisions
(Someone will put a laughing smiley and think I'm only talking about the Puig situation, that is wrong (but an obvious fault). As Koeman is finally melting a bit, his Puig treatment may even turn out to be good in the long run, and forgiven)
-playing Busquets as a double pivote
-playing Busquets as a dropping midfielder
-playing with four or five #10s at the same time (Cou, Griez, Messi, Pedri all seeking the same space at the same time)
-while at the same time having no width from WBs, some game Dest played on the left and Roberto on the right...
-suddenly going 3-5-2, looking even worse
-some games going full retard and substituting all midfielders for defenders/attackers
-most games letting Trincao play 30min, with no effect
-shifting formation 3/4/5 times some games, just making things worse

Just some of the stuff, but I think he is starting to play better, putting Busquets more in his right role, letting Puig play, giving a young player some minutes.
I was positive to this guy as an interim, but he disappointed me so many times and sometimes I thought it would be even hard to do it worse with the players available.

World media is picking up on the fact he is doing a great job. A few months too late I might say.

For the position we were in at the end of last season I personally think he is doing an excellent job. The games are enjoyable again we seem to be getting more confidence as we go on. And the youth players seem to be getting chances and doing well

I agree. But confidence is automatically building as we win games, which has been the case in 2021.

The big challenge is to keep the heads up when it doesn't work out the way as planned. The reaction after Sevilla loss was great against Alaves, but it's probably because it's not over.
As soon as we're totally out of a competition we need to keep going in the others, instead of giving up totally (like we did after Anfield when we played Copa final).

Just realized, when watching clips of his pre-game interview, how important the fact that he speaks Catalan is...
I don't know when was the last time Barca had a coach who didn't? Did Rijkaard speak any Spanish?
On the other hand, it's a huge barrier to the club (not only the coach). If you wanna bring a top-notch coach like Ten Haag or Nagelsman in the future, who don't speak the language, you cannot because of that

Exactly. Things get lost in translation. Recently read an anecdote about a coach that was working with translators and basically translators messed up his whole tactics.

Not sure if Koeman speaks Catalan though. He seems to understand it based on the interviews I have seen.

Rijkaard spoke Spanish well, and iirc he even pushed foreign player to speakthe language, even cited his preference of Valdes over Rustu due to language barriers (during start of his first season)

Speaking the language has been always a huge priority for top clubs, yes sometimes an exception will be made, but it remains exception.

Not sure why people acts like it is a Barca thing

Yeah, that's why we almost always hire Spanish coaches or former players (mostly Dutch) which people usually complain about.

Speaking the language is obviously important but if you're a Barca president/SD looking for a new coach and really believe Nagelsmann or Ten Hag is the best candidate for the job I don't think he should be rejected just because he doesn't speak Spanish. People can usually learn basic language relatively fast.

Didn't say it's just a Barca thing. I know it has been the norm since the beginning of the sport.

I am questioning, though, whether it should still stand in contemporary globalized world of football. The club is only to lose if it is maintained in the future.
Beside, there are topnotch interpreters that can be hired to work with a coach.

Pep studied German intensively for a year before joining Bayern, but let's say he didn't have that year off to study, should Bayern have reconsidered their hiring of him and approach someone else?
Of course not!

That is why I didn't quote you, because this argument has been here from several people.

The answer is of coarse yes actually.
If Pep wasn't willing to learn the language, then he isn't Barca Pep Guardiola, He is poor man version of it.
Pep has put Hleb in his doghouse when he refused to learn Spanish, he was furious when French players were speaking in French between themselves.
Coaches and teams need to be always speak the language and communicate freely with it, a good relationship is huge part of it.
If Ten Haag isn't willing to speak Spanish in matter of few months at least, then you are hiring a poor copy of him.
Globalization didn't change that. Most of those players have barely completed high school education and it will cause huge stresses if they have to communicate with coaches through translator.
