Sorry if I misunderstand you but I think this sounds a bit disrespectful to Masche. Yes, he was not brought as a CB but he has given us a lot over the years and he also took a leadership of the defense and whole team a lot like Puyi. We've had some great seasons but also gone through tough times on and off the field and we'd be much worse without a player and person like Masche. Just because Umtiti has taken his place in the best XI and is doing a great job we shouldn't forget about what Masche has done so far and will still do when we'll need him in what will most likely be his final season with us.

Masche was the replacement for Puyol as both a player and a leader.

He has been one of Barcas best performers the past 5/6 years.

Our defensive problems last season came down largely to the RB spot and the way our Midfield setup was and how easy for teams to cut through it leaving both Umtiti and Pique exposed. Heck the problems are still there under Valverde due to how slow Iniesta-Busi-Rakitic are.

We will never have a "Rock solid" Defensive system like Atletico. We don't sit deep, we will always have a High line that will always be vulnerable to counter attacks. it's just how the way we roll.

Defense is not done only by the two CBs, it's a job for the whole team. Also last year we didn't have a real RB, so the defensive line was not complete.
But I agree Pique and Umtiti and especially Pique could do better.

A team needs to defend as 11. When other teams counter attack us and we have only Pique - Titi to defend, don't expect them to pull off a miracle.

It's all business in the end of the day. A player with Umtiti's quality and most importantly potential cannot have such a low buyout clause. It's simply atrocious.
