Samuel Umtiti is a familiar face as far as Barcelona are concerned. The first reports they have on the defender are from 2010, even before Andoni Zubizarreta was made sporting director after Sandro Rosell won the elections in 2010. The reports relate to the U17 European Championships, which took place in Liechtenstein. The French side finished third in the tournament.
With Zubizarreta then appointed, the club sent a scout, Urbano Ortega, to the U19 European Championships in Estonia in 2012. France had a great side, including Paul Pogba and Geoffrey Kondogbia, and reached the semi-finals. Umtiti played a large role in the tournament. France met a Spain side featuring Jese Rodriguez, Paco Alcacer and Gerard Deulofeu in the last four in a game which went to extra-time after a 2-2 draw - with Umtiti scoring both of his country's goals, the second in injury time. In the addition 30 minutes, Pogba and Deulofeu each scored, before Spain won on penalties.
After that, Barça than gathered more information on the Lyon defender at the U20 World Cup in Turkey in 2013. France won the tournament. Umtiti was a regular in that side, but he missed the last 16 game due to an accumulation of bookings and was suspended for the final, too, after being sent off in the semi-final.
From that generation of French players, Barcelona have always had good references. Pogba, by then was already at Juventus, Kondogbia had been transferred from Sevilla to Monaco and Umtiti, despite his youth, was emerging at Lyon. Now, aged 22, he's ready to take strides forward: at Barça, a club that know him well.
