Samuel Umtiti

Cat Radio Journalist Jordi Bouda asked the question on why did we renew him especially when we bought Lenglet as well.

While I get why people are frustrated and mad at Umtiti there was a time that it made sense to renew him as he was performing great before he started to suffer those bad injuries and poor form. We made a choice that seemed like a good idea at the time but sometimes shit goes wrong as it did here.

Indeed. No way we could have predicted the injury. Renewing him was a no-brainer at the time.

Good for him.

Now he might miss out on on tens of millions of euros he'll probably want when he's 40 and retired.

When you are a competitive athlete, you think about your legacy. It is not like he isn't rich already, is getting top money at Barça and has a contract until 2023. At the end of his contract, he will be close to 30 y.o. and could chose an high paying gig in PL or exotic country (Turkey, China, etc.).

I don't see where he is actually losing tens of millions by staying at Barça. Also, being an important element in that WC winning team, he has absolutely no worries to have for his life after football. He will easily lands a contract in sport media.

I think you don't realize how important and satisfying it is for a footballer to win the WC.

was one of the chief actors in derailing our 17/18 season (biggest was still Valmierda) with his contract demands in the middle of the season

then goes on to terminally damage his knee despite the club's advice and expects to 'recuperate' on the club's dime while turning in worse performances so far this season than even Phil Jones.

absolute idiot and should be removed ASAP.

Getting rid of him will be almost impossible. I doubt Umtiti will take a pay-cut and who the hell would even want him at this point. Look how much trouble Madrid and United had in offloading Bale and Sanchez, and those players could offer a lot more on the pitch than Umtiti does right now.

The bigger issue now is why we relied on Umtiti as our third choice centerback this season while we have like 8 players stacked in midfield.

Time to bring back Murillo in January it looks like.

I said it before but considering how well Todibo performed the games he played and in Pre-season, he should be our third choice CB. Sure he doesn't have the experience as Umtiti does but what use does experience have in this case when said player is nowhere near up to standard?

The way Umtiti performs, we are likely to concede more goals with him in the side with his "Experience" than Todibo.

even Semedo at centerback might be worth trying at some point this season

Awful squad planning.

We had a terrible transfer window considering De Jong and Antoine were already wrapped up well before the summer.

Imagine had we actually targeted a need like CB this summer in say De Ligt rather than Neymar

But club, staff & players all share blame here with respect to Umtiti's medical management. You can't force a player to accept elective surgery but a failure nevertheless to convince him of what was best for his career/club

I recall I wrote about it in this thread back in the day, but I lost much of my sympathy for Umtiti even before his entire pathetic handling of his knee injury pre-2018 World Cup. Mainly due to how he behaved (in public) before the club decided to extend his contract.

Ever since that chronic knee injury he has looked done and dusted. Might as well part ways with him next summer or at least as soon as possible, even for peanuts, considering the fact that we bought him for a cheap price and that nobody is ever going to pay a lot of money for a crook with a dubious attitude and decision-making.

While de Ligt is a promising CB talent, I would prefer a CB like Konaté over him every day of the week and the CB position is generally a stacked position nowadays and tons of new promising CB are emerging each season. So not really worried about that position long-term as long as the clueless board (which is another problem) manages to replace Piqué and Umtiti adequately.

For starters giving Todibo a chance to prove himself and buying a Konaté level talent and potentially a finished product to replace one of Piqué or Umtti (if needed), would be the right thing to do.

I wonder how long Umtiti will be willing to sit on the bench.

Everyone says "I have no reason to leave Barca" but there comes a point that even you have to start questioning that. Arda was one of those guys but after being frozen out by Valverde, even he started to realize that it was time to move on.

Umtiti was a starter here and was France's number one along with Varane which helped them win the WC. Things were looking good for him until his injuries and drama surrounding his recovery and how it should have been approached. He did get his big fat contract extension even if it made him unfocused and people mad about it.

But Lenglet was signed but I don't think anyone expected him to be a starter as Umtiti at his best before his injuries and when he was focused was a titan himself and seemed like a better fit in terms of style to pair up with Pique's profile.

Umtiti's injury and the drama surrounding just gifted Lenglet the chance to establish himself and sure he isn't perfect but you can't deny the hard work hard he did to establish himself. Umtiti came back and has looked so far off the pace that he doesn't look up to standard to what we need.

Even with him being fit for Preseason he looks dreadful still. Make matters worse, it appears his spot on the NT which he probably thought was untouchable has been taken by Lenglet and even Laporte before he got injured as well.

Let us see how Long Umtiti is really willing to be content with his situation. Right now the way he has performed since he got back and Preseason, I cannot see him even making a dent in winning his spot back from Lenglet and the more he sits the harder it is to get back into the France team.

I'm guessing it depends on how much he wants to be in the Euro's. I believe that if the situation remains the same, he will probably ask for a loan in the Jan. transfer window for the remainder of the season.

No way should we be doing him any favors at this point.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to sell him as I think his knees are finished. But realistically, I think he'll ask for a loan in this transfer windows if everything remains the same. Plus if he goes on loan, it opens a space for Todibo who is better than Umtiti on current form imo.
