Zubi for all his faults did follow some good players like DonAK said.
The MD report I read stated despite his impressive performances when he got to the Lyon First team we thought he was too young/raw to sign him during the Zubi era and we waited for him to develop more. Zubi got sacked in January of last year (2015) before he even had the idea of pulling the trigger to buy him.
This summer since we were looking for a new young CB that we wouldn't really need to spend a truck load on. Robert before the Summer window did a lot of work scouting wise and I wouldn't be surprised if he looked over Zubi's old reports on Umtiti and Robert adding his own reports he thought it would be a great idea to get Umtiti or at least add him to one of the final targets on his list.
Considering our history when it comes to buying CBs since 2008, Umtiti will very likely end up becoming one of the rare success stories. Marlon is another one that I also want to be a success story since down the line Mathieu and Mascherano are aging and will need to be eventually replaced.
