Samuel Umtiti

Looking at the highlight reel he is quick, good reflexes and seems to be able to control the ball well with his head, passes between lines, wins duels. Looks really promising.

But then again...a highlight reel is still a highlight reel.

Those were always his strengths when he was at Lyon and he's showing them here with us. while it's true this forum has it's own share of opinions on younger players or transfers during this window I think we can all agree Umtiti is easily the best signing of the summer for us.

for 25 million and where prices are now these days it's a incredible bargain. in one area we have been weak to reinforce for years we managed to hit the jackpot with a very talented young CB in Umtiti.

Definitely a bargain considering how good he was at the Euro's...where his price would've certainly inflated up.

He was signed just 3 days before his first start in the quarters ! Rami got a suspension and that brick Deschamps was forced to play him. At least he had the good sense to keep him on.

Yeah, would have loved to have seen the meltdown if we bought Stones. Umtiti is twice the player at half the price!

Bad luck to concede when he came on. Not sure if he could do more or was it Masch who should have covered the player.

He could have slide for the ball and I think Masch would have done that if he was there, but no reason to give a lot of importance to that...

Umtiti was covering another player. Mashe and Iniesta didnt follow their player so Umtiti had to switch but it was to late, cant really be blamed. Solid performance otherwise. Imo hes better than Masch.

Exactly. Player freed himself from Iniesta and Masch by simply ramping up the pace and none decided to track and mark him. Umtiti then had to come in from defending another player.

In hindsight, the only thing Samuel could've done was foul Piatti before his crucial pass to Moreno but given there was no way he could now that Espanyol's execution would be flawless. Umtiti can't be blamed on this one as he did everything he was supposed to do. Gotta say Masch was caught sleeping. At 78:37, he was ahead of Lopez and had him the dude in sight when he started his sprint.
At that point, it was a 2 on 2 with two additional Espanyol players flying in fast.

What was Masch thinking running at half pace and watching the action unfold... probably a laps in concentration in an otherwise great game. His sliding interception/pass to Iniesta led to the Pistolero's goal

You're right guys. When I was watching it live camera was focused so I couldn't tell where other players were. :blind:
