Sergio Busquets

Everytime he got the ball he was 1 second too slow to react. Maybe the brain is still the same but the legs sure as hell are long gone. Sure, everyone around him were the same, but he is the constant in all these loses over the years where we are overrun in midfield.

He needs someone on the same line to cover for his lack of physicality and speed but then you have one less player to make runs through the middle. De Jong can do that to an extent but that's just asking to have one player restrict himself to help Busi not be such a big liability. We need players who can contribute on their own instead of having others compensate. We'll always be on the backfoot like this.

Should be told he won't be a starter from the next season. Can't see Laporta being able to get rid when he earns 23m gross a year still. Bench or look for another team if can't handle it.

Tchoaumeni is there but most likely Madrid bound.

It's time to place physicality at an equal ground as talent and football IQ. It's so obvious Barcelona have looked past that and make us have too many embarrassing moments due to lack of physical players. We are never gonna be the best again until we do this.

Meanwhile only the other day the extremely physique oriented 7th placed Spanish team Villarreal, playing young physical MONSTERS as Dani Parejo and Raul Albiol, beat German leaders Bayern Munich who in turn turned away from physique lately for more talent and IQ... Or?

Villarreal defend with a low block. Busi would likewise look good in one.

It's not about a low or high block, as it isn't about age or physique. It is about being well organized and setup, and being decently tight. The talk about football turning more physical lately is a chimera.

Compared to 2011 it absolutely did become more physical.

I just did a google search and in 5 seconds found this article:
https://sciencenordic.com/denmark-football-society--culture/scientists-football-has-changed-dramatically/1440511 Granted it's about EPL and from 2016 but the difference was already evident back then.

Football is more physical and fast-paced these days since teams started to prioritize counterpressing more. Physical preparation, pressing patterns, everything is different compared to 2011 and being updated.

Players with freaky athleticism being dominant is becoming the norm in many sports the last few years and it's only going to continue with sports science constantly evolving.

Yes, Klopp's Liverpool and Flick's Bayern never happened.
They are just chimeras

Actually many other sports Basketball, NFL have been athletic dominant for last 2 decades. There is a reason these sports are dominated by African Americans because of their inclination of having more fast twitch muscle fibers genetically.
I would not even call it Freaky if enough work is put in the gym. Extra muscle is going to give you that additional split second burst to create 1ft space. Which is all that is required

Football always has had a lot more skill involved however the skill can no longer compensate for difference in Athletiscism once teams require all players to work on their physique. There are natural limits to human body hence this will not be forever.

Get rid of him. Five years now or whatever. The guy is useless in these games. He can't do jack shit if pressed and his movement way too slow.

Busi running about all over pitch miles out of position as usual and they took advantage big time.

Cant protect a defence worth a fuck and been found out for it in all but one year since 2012.

Absolute liability as usual when asked to do his job defensively and not top CB chases ball for interceptions high up park like that. Absolute suicidal approach.

Same shit forever.. really tiresome.

Barca needs to find him replacement right now

If you had taken 5 seconds to read the article and another 5 seconds to think about the article you would maybe not post the article.

Yes it is very obvious that football will be more and more physical - as it will be more and more technical and more and more psychological. It improves naturally, in all aspects. And yes it is true that Klopps gegenpressing came in style 10 years ago and somewhat was able to counter Peps more control based game for a while. It is also true that in the early 2000s there was the exact same talk about the future players being 185cm+ minimum and physique becoming more important, we saw what happened then with Barcelona and Spain, they destroyed football.

Football is both a bit cyclical, and a bit rock-paper-scissor. Barcelonas style since long is about controlling the ball and the game, they should continue to build on that style the best they can, and not try and follow the cycles manically in order to compete with other clubs better suited for other styles. Busquets' style and class is still great and very much good enough for both Barcelona and Spain, and he should not be auto-blamed the few times this team lose.

No one here says we should CHANGE style.
But we should ADAPT it to what football has become today.
Pep does it at City. Why shouldN'T we do it as well?
