Keita did fine work for this team. It's not surprising he wants to play more and earn some really big money before he retires. Getting old on the Barca team is quite rare, we'll see bigger names than him leave over the next couple years.

I don't think JDS or any other of the promoted players will play much this year. Thiago will be playing more, after he gets healthy. I don't understand this talk about Masch not playing any DM, he's pretty effective there for Argentina. If the team does succeed in landing another top-flight CB, it's not like Masch is just going to move to the bench. He'll be close to the top of the team in minutes again this year.

Firstly Keita was a DAMN good squad and team player. EVERY team needs a player like him. He put in a solid shift for Barca in his stint here. Not the most naturally gifted players but brought the African strength and power to Barca. I think getting rid off all the black players has been a mistake. ETo, Tourre, Abidal & Keita have all been fundamental in Barca's recent success. I dont know if the club have a deliberate policy to recruit only latin or catalan/spanish players but it certainly looks like it. I wish him luck and hope he has great success.

WTF is the obsession with Martinez???? He is worth 25 million at best and we need a PROPER CB not a converted one. Why pay 40m for a guy you're going to convert into a CB. Stupid and I hope it doesnt happen.

It's no secret that Barca prefers homegrown players, but there's no agenda against people of certain origins. It's simply due to the fact that our style demands technical players, not physical ones. Although one could argue that Yaya was technical, but this was a case of either him or Sergio and in the end Pep preferred Sergio and Yaya couldn't accept being Segio's backup. I think the move benefited both players.

This is a reason why I laugh at the English papers when they publish reports about Barcelona drooling over players like Bale (40-50m, really?). Bale is just a bit over average with an impressive pace, that's just about it. Tello has pace too but Cuenca is preferred because he's more technical.

So it's really all down to the style of the team. Barcelona's transfer deliberations come with far more headaches than other teams'. In addition to the peculiar skill requirements, the club's values are also important and they make sure they sign players that are team players and show humility both on and off the pitch.

Never been a fan of Chelsea, how was Oriol this past season? I believe AVB played him more frequently than RDM (Chelsea should consider hiring managers with shorter names), right?

Oriol was both good and bad. He started brightly with the Cup prelims (Carling and FA) solid outings against Everton and Fulham, and replicated the same in the league(vs Man City) when AVB began to trust him more. But his sec half of the season was a disappointment, owing to injuries and lack of mins. From my significant viewing of both the player and the team, he performs better when played week in week out. He's more a rhythm player, who gets better the more mins he accumulates under his belt. His sub(and irregular starts) appearances have been below average, making him a liabilty(so much that some chelsea fans wanted him gone with AVB lol). He's at a stage in his career, where he needs regular pitch time to minimize the errors and fine tune his game (mostly his positional discipline esp that he lacks pace big time). And he won't get that from the bench. He def has the potential (i've been on his side earlier), but he'd disappoint as a Busi-back up at the moment. I can assure you. He needs atleast 2 full season top flight experience before we can consider him in any Barca role.

He's not favored by RDM (don't think he rates Oriol..also may be because he was a AVB signing). It would be better if he moved on loan to a lesser team where he could get to work regularly on his game with minimal expectations.

As for Seydou,

Been a privilege. Both sides.

Thanks for the detailed post. Those young players need minutes. That's why Bojan should have played elsewhere sooner. RDM was an emergency replacement last season. This season he may do differently and Oriol may get more playing time. Since he's from Barca, I assume he wouldn't do well in a defensive or counter-attacking set up. So we'll have too see the team's style under the new coach. Surely Chelsea can't play as conservatively as last season since they have to challenge for the title and draws do not do them any good.

I stick to the less expensive CB option then. Save the money...

for Neymar.
