He was always massively overrated on this forum. It was easy to look world class, when you play for a team that has no competition in the league.

A system player, just like Busi, if the conditions are not ideal, he will look average at best.

He has looked worldclass to me in the few Liverpool games I've seen this season. Hope he keeps playing "poor" according to the world, and that Barcelona can snatch him in the summer already

Covid CL. Bayern were clearly the fittest team, they had no competition after the break.

As I said, in a dominant team he will look good, but in the past seasons, when Bayern weren't the biggest force in the CL, his performances were average.

He was decent everytime I saw him, just gives away too many fouls. People are trying way too hard to frame him as a flop, it just feels forced at this point.
He played like merely 10 games of which only 2-3 weren't good, he was injured 2 months and returned to a dysfunctional squad that plays out of confidence, new league and team and all in all isn't even actually bad. Wait a few months till Liverpool regains form, I think this dude will be one of the best mids in the PL.

Reactionary takes as ever. RM barely grinds a win vs Valladolid? Zidane black magic. Thiago doesn't play blinders? Flop.

Pipe down y'all

i get your point wolfe (we are a fickle bunch here at Barcaforum) but Thiago really was VERY poor today, and in the last few matches. to be fair, so has Liverpool as a whole, but still. hasnt exactly lit it up

Didnt he usually fall through in tough CL-ties for Bayern in the past? Last season not included, of course.

He is good when things are going well, but is he really the guy to rely on when things get rough?

he isnt. he adds flash but not stability/resilience when things are tough. i remember he didnt add anything when we knocked bayern out in 2015, or when atleti did in 2016, nevermind when real did in 2017 and 18

He certainly did add pressing resistance in the CL final which eventually won them the title.

that is true but we are talking about the pattern rather than the exception. we've acknowledged his solid performance for bayern in the CL last year

But there was never really an issue with him at big games. He was never bad vs Barca or Madrid, there just wasn't a whole lot to say about him.

People automatically assume that when players like Thiago weren't particularly noticable in a loss, he must've played bad. His main job is providing stability, pressing and press resistance. If he looks to have an uneventful boring game, that's when he simply did the bare minimum of fulfilling the expectations. But when Bayern does not win, people look for scapegoats and point at players they haven't seen very much, irregardless of wether the faults were at their end or not.
