What do we do if Messi doesn't renew?

I hoped Barto would let him go (for a transfer fee ofc) when he wanted out and i still hope he leaves. I think its simply better for both parties. He can go to PSG or City where he will have bigger chances to win titles and the club gets rid of his wages, make room to build the team around other players.. basically focusing more on the future. Messi is getting old and him leaving very soon is inevitable. There is no point delaying it.

Today I was "mind blowed" by an Utd fan that was constanty crapping on Messi.
His "mantra" after the contract-leek:
He is overpaid.
He got 200m for loyalty fee and renewal.
He is sucking dry Barca.
He ain't worth it. No one is...
He doesn't love Barca.
He is a bad example to the other players that now suck club dry...

I told him, but at least Messi earned his money, not like Cou, Griez, Demb and similar. That contract leek is not in full. We don't know what is in it. We only know the end figures.
The thing is...

Can Barcelona afford Messi or not.
Can Barcelona even renew Messi?

No. Thay can't. There is no money.
It is plain to see even to the blind man.
He can renew with some "simbolic" fee or he won't renew at all.
It is now time to show.
Is Barcelona mes que un club or not.
If it is, then Messi must accept the fact that there is no money.
So either stay or leave.

If he leaves, then, given the leeches and bums like Dembele and Umtiti are refusing to leave, we are stuck with what we got. Maybe one star signing and that is it.
Try to survive incoming year.
And it look slike this covid-disaster-shitsow won't end this year. There will be no "pre-pandemic" income.
so tighten the belt.
accept the facts and spend what you have... and you have 1.2b debt.

How does he not love Barca when his only option is Barca?? Not to mention how crappily we treated him the past year he might be overly loyal to us. Hah

They are just bitter because Ronaldo never loved United as much as Messi Barca.

We were 4th, 5th and 6th from 2001 to 2003 and we survived, in fact we reached the new greatness with Ronaldinho and later with Messi.

I mean, so what even if we end 5th in 2 seasons.
It's not as if we have ANY chances in a CL.
So, what is the difference between being KO'd 5:0 against anyone or not playing in a CL for a year or two.
Except, that is always better to play in a CL due to earning money.

We need CL money now more than ever. Even in normal times CL money is crucial for club to stay longterm competitive with other European elite clubs but now it's important for club's survival.

Even if we'd go out in quarter-finals in pre-corona times just CL prizes were representing around 10% of our budget. Now when we lost a lot of other incomes CL money could be 15-20% of total incomes in coming years. And then there is more sponsorship money we'd miss out (in)directly if not playing in CL.

OTOH Messi at 34 is still bringing more money to the club than most of other players currently here combined. We don't have Neymar (regardless of what you think of him as a player) or other highly marketable players anymore. We (as outsiders) will probably never get exact numbers but I'm sure club has calculations about how much money individual player can bring to the club. There were reports that Messi's financial return to the club is twice as high as his wages and while I don't totally believe this I think a close to 1:1 ratio is still very likely.

If his wages now would be reduced for 40-50% (which by all reports it should be although the club is pushing to even lower financial hit for the next two seasons by trying to pay him some money later which Tebas doesn't allow) while his financial return would stay around the same then it's understandable why Barca wants to keep him even if it will be hard to afford him in current situation. When Nou Camp will be open to 70%+ of capacity I'm sure people will rush to watch Messi again (especially knowing he very likely only has two more seasons here before leaving) regardless of how the rest of the team will look.

I told him we can't talk sense after Messi and Barca nailed them twice in UCL finals :)

Being 2nd or 4th doesn't really matter much. We were still 17 points ahead of 5th place though.

yeah, just pointing out that what he said is not backed up by reality. and discussion was around having messi vs not having him.

we'd probably make 4th anyway, but that's mainly because teams like valencia/villareal/bilbao are too weak to be challengers.

we've just finished a season closer to 4th than 2nd or 1st places.

This season is hardly one to compare to.

About as disruptive a season as will ever have, new coach, barely a pre season, Messi wanting to leave etc.

If repeat this season and other teams are more settled and Barca is chaos and Messi leaves then maybe be struggling for top four but wont be the case and likes of Sevilla will struggle to hold on to Kounde etc.

Also younger player improving, Fati back from injury and squad improving etc all would matter.

Barca have better squad than likes of Sevilla and definitely better than others by far.

Weird situation for barca, can't afford to renew but maybe can't afford to not renew him? Undeniably increases our revenue, by how much has been discussed but we can't be sure. Sporting-wise he increases our chances of winning things which means more income. So not signing messi means less commercial income, sponsor money, most likely less prize money. However, we could take a chance on those things. Paying him the salary means definitely losing whatever amount we pay him.

No right or wrong answer. Well unless you say not renewing Messi means we can suddenly sign players. Not renewing Messi means nothing by the look of things for our transfer budget. Would love to be wrong and we suddenly sign Haaland.

Big clubs do just fine financially when the big stars leave, Barca had one of the highest revenues before Messi, will continue after.

Of course, replacing him on the pitch is a different story.

Surely he stays, otherwise we'd be hearing about PSG and City offering him mega contracts, at least PSG would.

Why would PSG or City want a 34 year old Messi on insane wages + sign on fee? only Barca is stupid enough to give out those type of contracts

City wanted him last summer and PSG want him this summer.

I don't know what kind of bubble some of you guys live in where no other club in the World want Messi

He's not going to get the same kind of contract he had at Barca, but would still be able to get a pretty damn good deal.

See that's very strange for me. Folks close to Barca always talk about the club losing huge money once Messi leaves in sponsorships etc. Yet, when Ronaldo left Madrid, and he was, mind me, bigger star, you guys didn't notice it that much, if at all. Is Real actually so much bigger of a brand? Sounds odd to me.

Of course, we're not in a great position right now to make such delas, but in more usual circumstances.
