What do we do if Messi doesn't renew?

Real Madrid have always been among the top money makers in European Football while with Barca it truly kickstarted with Ronaldinho and then later Messi.

They do seem to have way more competent people negotiating new deals for them too that might not have re-neg clauses depending on a single player while we possibly signed onto such deals while we thought Messi would be here forever and retire here too.

Anyway, all speculation right now, but if it is true that Nike, Rakuten and our other sponsors have re-neg or exit clauses depending on Messi being a Barcelona player that obviously makes him an even bigger priority for the club to retain.

I wouldn't put it past the last board to agree to something as stupid as that.

See that's very strange for me. Folks close to Barca always talk about the club losing huge money once Messi leaves in sponsorships etc. Yet, when Ronaldo left Madrid, and he was, mind me, bigger star, you guys didn't notice it that much, if at all. Is Real actually so much bigger of a brand? Sounds odd to me.

Of course, we're not in a great position right now to make such delas, but in more usual circumstances.

First off, for the their club Messi eas the bigger star by big margin, like really big margin.

Real Madrid are the biggest club in football, never in my life they were out of yop 3 in revenue
Barca only touched big 3 in revenue with Messi, and then became top team with him

I very much doubt this is true, but if true, it just shows how inept, incompetent and pathetic the previous board had been.

Our brand is much bigger than Messi and they should have never agreed to something like that. It is never wise to tie the financials of a club to a single player, no matter who that player is.

Actually, no, Barca were within top 3 in revenues the years before Messi too.

Where did you get that? From what I'm seeing here is that Barcelona were in the top 3 since the 2005-2006 season except for once in the 2013-2014 season.

Messi was technically a Barca-player in 2005, but are we really going to attribute the revenue-situation to a player who was just breaking through at that point?

Clearly Barcelona was becoming an economic powerhouse at that point regardless, Messi boosted it further later, of course.

But Barca always managed to attract star players : Maradona , Cruyff , Ronaldo etc. Would like to see where Barca was ranked revenue wise throughout the years.

Yeah, our revenue was in and out of the top 10 and but the surge really started with the arrival of Ronaldinho. Messi helped push it up further in the last decade.

Oh got it. I misunderstood your statement as I thought you were implying that the club were close near top 3 before Messi's years as a Barca player, which is why I pointed to the 2005-2006 season.

With or without Messi, our brand is there and it is huge. It takes the right people to exploit, unlock and unleash our potential post-Messi, and I hope Ferran Reveter & Co. are the right people.

About the bold: you're probably right. I'm not a good judge of that.

Regarding Barca being top 3 in revenue: maybe not, but the club has always managed to attract big names and have short spells of success. Mian was one of the biggest clubs in the world and their revenue started declining slow. Barca might be a similar case, we need to stay successful to have a chance.

Barca's revenue (relative) has certainly been pushed with Messi, but I think we have built a much stronger brand in all those years which is not only associated with Messi.

I think this would have been true if A-No covid B- Barca was doing well as a team before it.
CR7 left RM after 3 CL in row, 4 in 5 years. In 2nd year after him they managed to win Liga.
Let's say Anfield never happened (we lost normally) , I would say if Messi left in 2019 and there was no covid, that would have been ideal time for him to leave and club to do well without him.

Now? 4 consecutive years with CL humiliations, 2 years with only CDR to show for, covid fucking us over.

Yep. 100%. We'd need to have a short-term plan to change the situation and I'm not sure if there can be one.

Even if he agreed to play for free, he would still not be able to be registered as of now.

I think we will know after Copa. IMO, if he pen the contract, it will show that the club know the solutions to salary cap.

If not, it may suggest that the club do not know how to get around salary cap. And Messi leave a way out for himself.

Otherwise he can just sign the contract and wait for the club to solve problems just like Aguero, Depay, Garcia.
