Angelo Ogbonna fits all that criteria, Exceptionally quick, strong and excellent reader of the game. He also has the best pass rate for a defender in Europe. But we've never been linked to him at any point, Obviously because we have such a shit scouting system.
Juventus has showed a lot of interest on him in the past, even had bid rejected last summer. There are rumors they'd bid for him again. I'd love to see him here though, especially because there not many good defenders out there with much pace as this guy.

Hummels seems to be the most likely candidate. I've only seen the odd game for Dortmund and Germany so I haven't seen enough of him to make a fair judgement. However his lack of pace does worry me. As we saw with Di Maria against Puyol, we are seriously slow in centre of defence at the moment and having one fast centre back is desirable when playing such a high line.

We need a player who's athletic, but also mobile. Strong, but fast. Tall and impressive in his physical appearance. He has to be tall or at least above our average height, because we need to defend somehow at set pieces (although Pique's height didn't help him against Varane last night, which have something to do with his awful positioning). But his height shouldn't slow him down, because we also need to defend during counter-attacks.
Basically, we need to find our own Raphael Varane.

We've needed that for years. They opted to sign a midfielder with little defending ability. Any club ruled by incompetents will go pear-shaped eventually.
This season Tito/Roura have tried to copy some of Pep's tactics and remove some of them at the same time. It's become a convoluted mess. Pep's system was well thought out and one that was developed taking the squad's strengths and weakness's into mind, it seems the current management is asking too much of the players.. although it hasn't shown much because how talented the players are, but in big matches where the opposition are well oiled, determined and confident in defense, it shows.
I think a CB like Hummels would be perfect to simply play Puyol's role in the squad, but the problem is that he is not the fastest. A pacy and young CB can be bought although then we'd miss out on pure defending ability. As mentioned earlier we need a player like Varane but there is only one out there. Marquinhos anyone?

Hummels would need someone beside him like Subotic who does not bomb forward like he does & leave the backline exposed. Plus, a high line with Hummels is dangerous as he lacks agility to get back in time.

Vertonghen could be good. Made more sense to get him last year, but he'd probably still be cheaper than Hummels.
Subotic could be a good option as well.

Exactly what we need. Nothing more to add.
I really like Hummels, he was my first option...but now I have the same feeling too, Piqué/Hummels might not work, too similar.
