Pélé was "the greatest".
World champion with Brazil at age of 17, in 1958. Also champion in '62 and '70. Winner of Copa Libertadores and Intercontinental Cup with Santos. For me, Pélé was a most completed player.

ooh different generations, different styles. you cant compare them
right now messi is better then both of them. has the technique, speed, ability to score goals.
best of the 50's pele
best of the 70's maradona (although i like cruijff as well)
best of the first decennia > sooo many, zidane, bergkamp, messi, gerrard)

I agree, but Maradona is more "apropriate" to the '80s, because he only appears in the end of '70 decade (in 1978 Menotti excluded him from the final list of Argentina players for WC '78 and only in 1979 with the Argentina team sub '17 he appears)... so perhaps your choice is better for the '80s, no? ;)

why is marradona up for this?? we all know that modric is much better than him. :D

:lol::lol::lol:

Totally agree, there has never been a player the equivalent of Luca Modric, and there never will be. He's simply stunning with the ball, Pele and Maradonna simply fall by the wayside in comparism with the great Luca Modric.......

;) but if I had to choose second it would be Pele, simply because he's the person I've been brought up to consider "the greatest footballer of all time" (although the hand of god does make me laugh) and so it will always remain that way. They are from different eras, its too hard to judge. Modric is miles better than they both ever were though.....

most people say marradon because he was the only one they could watch as television boomed at the time marradon was playing. i say jarzinho was the best
Thats a valid point. Besides this, you can hardly compare players of different centuries with each other, just b/c the evolution of football was at different levels.

Id still rather choose Maradona b/c he seems more ahead of the rest of the players of his time - easily 20 yrs tbh. What Maradona did in the eighties would be enough to be one of the best 10 players right now imo. And thats what makes him very exceptional.

I have Cruyff a very close second to Maradona and then Di Stefano third. Then Pele, Beckenbauer, Garrincha, van Basten, Zidane, Eusebio, Dalglish etc

I know is very hard to compare players who not play in the same time. To make it less hard is we have to look how he is (in theses case "was") worth for his team, how his idea effect the game. If you said, "present game are much harder than the old days, and bla bla bla stuff", we could easily said "ahh, robben or malouda is much better than cruijff", "modric? he's much better than maradona".

What zidane could do with a ball on his feet, maradona could done the same with an orange fruit. And for pele, he was also the greatest. Though the truth is he "only" won WC twice. WC '62 was garrincha's WC, pele was injured. And for consideration, pele....pele never been brazil's captain in WC. Cause, for the team, there are others brazil stars who had more leadership than him.

And also "pele was more lucky than maradona cause brazil had players who could back pele up, like in WC '62. And for WC '70, i don't know if brazil could won it if pele is out injured, but that brazil's team were considerably as the best team ever exist in football. As for maradona, he didn't had that kinda luxury, he won WC by himself".

i could have played in the world cup in the 1950's and pele never even played in europe and always had great players around him for brasil.... Maradona won the world cup with a not so good team and took NAPOLI to serie A titles

i am not biased at all but i will say diego Maradona..

imagine how great he would have been had he not done all the drugs....

i pick diego by a small margin.

if maradona gave sweet FA about his image, picking him would'nt cause to much controversy.

maradona played in a faster era with plenty of ruthless tackling, compared to the slower tempo of pele's time (though i believe pele would have excelled in any era, class after all is permanent). Also, i dont put that much stock in, the "pele has 3 world cups over diego's 1" argument. team accomplishments imo, is'nt the be all end all in these discussions. why dont we use individual merits as the barometer? it's those kinds of argument that make players like le tissier get overlooked in the grand scheme of things, despite their undeniable quality.

also did pele really play that much of a part in brazils '58 triumph? dont think so. Pele played in a brazil squad burgeoning with supreme talent (jairzinho, tostao etc.....). maradona played with good players as well (guys like burruchaga and valdano had good tournaments too). would argentina have won the '86 tournament without diego? unlikely. would brazil have won '70 without pele? wuite possible. The quality of pele's squad should not be held against him (circumstances afterall), but since you're already splitting hairs in regards to the case of "diego vs. pele", that fact should certainly be taken into account.

at club level look at the disparity between diego and pele. Pele played in the brazilian championship. diego played in Serie A, which at the time was THE gold standard of club football (zico in udinese, platini's juventus, rummenige at inter, the milan dream team of van basten-gullit-rijkard-maldini-baresi-costacurta). napoli won nothing before him and won nothing after him; which is the reason he's god made flesh for those people.

as i said, both are THE GREATEST. You'd be splitting hairs when debating the issue. but it's my opinion that diego has the (slight)edge.
