Why are you a Barcelona fan?

Because I like the football... and admittedly partly because of the success. I suppose you could say I'm part of the post-2009 bandwagon. I got into football pretty recently, and Barca have been the best team recently, so yeah. But I also like the football Barca play. And I stuck with Barca throughout last season, so I'm not one of those glory hunters who jumps from team to team.

* Barça genuinely play the best football in the world at the moment. They bring out the best in the sport, raising it almost to the level of a fine art at times.
* The club has overwhelmingly been one of the most honourable in the world, and represents basically everything a sporting club should be. It is owned by its supporters, not some unscrupulous (or even scrupulous) super-rich guy.
* The players of the club, not to mention managers and fans have by and large shown impeccable attitudes over the years. All have been mainly devoid of scandal, and while the upper management hasn't been great often, they are something to be proud of.
* The part Spanish/Catalan heritage that I have.

Since 96 because of Robson´s team. Robson was the coach of my city team, Porto, and that had 2 Porto players: Baia and Couto plus Figo. And the amazing Ronaldo.
Been a fan ever since.

Try sticking with the team after it goes for a 5-year trophyless run. Besides, we won everything else but the CL & La Liga last season ;)

Well, 2 super cups, a club world cup and a CDR aren't too impressive IMO. CL > La Liga > all of them. Well, I suppose it could have been worse, I could have been an Arsenal fan or whatever :p

hahah the fact that some people call winning 4 trophies, finishing 2nd in the league & making the CL semis a "bad year" kinda shows how spoiled some Barca fans have become :p

I think it's less a case of fans becoming spoiled and more a case of newer fans being spoiled from the beginning. I am a newer fan as well, since the 2005/2006 season, so I have also been spoiled, but it's always useful to keep a wider perspective. Then again I also like Arsenal and they haven't won anything since I started supporting them so maybe that has an influence.

It's not that simple.
And those trophies would have been absolutely wonderful if we didn't know what this team was capable of.
Do you think players weren't disappointed at CL exit to Chelsea or losing La Liga?
When you are the best you are disappointed when you don't reach the top. It's only natural. Comparisons with barren years are no good here as teams under Gaspart were not even close to what we have now.

Mike: it's not cynical, I'm just being realistic.

The fact that we've been able to enter into a period of growth both trophy and youth wise should be respected and cherished. But claiming that we've always been in such a position (many do) is short-sighted. When the Dream Team was crumbling we barely had any prospects that looked even half-decent in the B team. Both Xavi and Puyol were anomalies of their time, which led us to rely on players like Oleguer, Gerard Lopez and Gabri as our base.

Just saying that we have only recently had the luck to enjoy fully of the labour of our youth academy, and we should enjoy of it to its fullest. Not to the detriment of the team as a whole, however.

In terms of youth development Athletic, Ajax, River and Boca come to mind.

With all due respect, Barcelona lost at least 10 years of hard work at La Masia becuse of stupid politics by our executive board. Already in the mid 90s there were several players that could have been much more than they were had in not been because of reckless spending on useless players, Giovanni anyone? Then contracting Van Gaal who tried to convert Barcelona into Ajax 2.0 wasn't really the best way either to promote La Masia players. There are many examples of highly talented players we lost because of over reliance on expensive players that flopped.

Well put. Also any season were Madrid finish above us in the league is a bad season. Although the cup win did save it somewhat.

Sorry, let me clarify what I meant. Of course it's disappointing when Barca (especially this current Barca) don't win a major trophy. And it's disappointing coming second to Madrid, or being knocked out of the CL by a team who on paper should have been able to beat. I was more trying to get across that people who became fans during this era (and I include myself in this) have had an easy ride compared to fans of some other clubs. And I'm not even saying that in a negative or cynical way, hence I put a smiley at the end.

Barça is one of my 2 teams, together with Anderlecht (i'm from Belgium), it has been that way for twenty years since the days of Stoichkov, Romario, Koeman, Cruyff coaching. They always tried to play attractive football and they have gifted skilled players.
