Yes, certainly, on individual level I'm sure they can give more when they do lack something they show at club level. But isn't a longer stretch of poorer performance symptomatic of something else? Not to absolve them of stinking it up individually, but the contrast in player performance between club and NT I always thought has more to do with far narrower talent pool than what you're normally used to with clubs having to source from absolutely anywhere irrespective of location.
There has historically been only 3-4 nations that regularly produced quality player across all positions in 1-2 overlapping generations, perhaps only Germany and France being exceptional, maybe Italy and Germany also, or a few Balkan countries, and more recently Portugal which tended to have a fairly consistent production of similar level players. All the rest have always had big issues matching the quality of their star with a supporting cast at least good enough to not make it seem like NT has nothing other than its star. Most sides don't even have 1 world class defender that they can count on in several tournaments, let alone a consistent pairing of 2, or having more flexibility. When you have talent pool as deep as the 4 top nations mentioned before, the dynamic is very different. For Norway, Poland, Sweden, Ukraine, several African nations, it's very difficult to break those attitudes. Lewandowski, Kuba and Piszczek played together in Dortmund, and then had to go beg Glik (Monaco) to handle his mate from Legia Warsaw - they managed the best tournament result since 1980s. Norway with Haaland and Ode don't have that. Occasionally these teams have 1-2 good attackers who work together, possibly an above average keeper, but otherwise weight of performance is always on the stars' shoulders. Some welcome it and perform anyway, but most do not, especially when it's likely defensive partners are more likely to have a terrible game and they are, and then they'll have to work twice as hard to regain the lost ground in a match.
