No subs for Messi and Busquets because they're in a class of their own in their positions. Di Maria in the starting XI because he has outstanding work-rate and is atleast top 5 in the world in terms of chance-creation.

So from my April 09 team only Alves, Cheillini, Messi and Iniesta remain.

Neuer has replaces Casillas - but not by much.

Kompany has replaced Ferdinand.

Lahm has replaced Evra.

Busquets has replaced JM.

Xavi has replaced Gerrard.

Suarez has replaced Torres.

Ronaldo has replaced Villa.

Don't know why Xavi was never in my 09 team

Why is Neuer considered good?

His positioning on corners is frankly pathetic, he's arrogant, cocky and although he makes some good saves he is mostly living up to his hype due to Bayern's defense.

He's cocky as hell and I hate him, but the guy can be a pretty good shot stopper. Also, there aren't many goalkeepers in the world that come to mind who are consistently the best in the world (Caballero would've been up there for me, but he's only shown it this season). Buffon is still first for me, then Neuer, then Casillas (he hasn't been at his best for a year or two now)

Pretty good tbh , only weakness to my mind is Mata . I'd use David Silva or Cazorla ( spelling ) .

Considering his success at such young age and positive reviews on him, i think he deserves it. Plus, Germany has always been proud of their goalkeepers; (Lehmann and Kahn)
In fact I don't get why all the hate instead... besides the world cup incident

Clarification please?

Is this World XI based on the players general footballing ability, or this seasons excellence only?

Because I have seen players in this list (eg. Kompany, Varane etc.) who are obviously outstanding footballers, but have hardly played this season.

And shouldn't it be submitted when the season is finished, i.e. after the UCL Final?

He's very overrated, IMO. Very good goalkeeper but I wonder how often people watch him, he often makes howlers.

Very surprised at so many Suarez picks, he's a good player but should not be in a world 11.

Wanted to fit Mata and Villa in, but considering Villa's injuries and lack of regular starts I didn't think it was deserved. On his day I still think he's one if not the best striker in world football.
